"Hamburgers are ready!" called Bud. "Come and get 'em!"

"Oh, boy!" cried little AJ, the Roberts' son. "Hamburglers!" He made a bee line for his father's side.

"AJ! You have to come and get a plate and a bun first, Sweetie!" called Harriett.

Mac walked up behind the youngster and handed him her plate with an empty bun. "You just take this one, AJ, and I'll go get another one."

AJ took the paper plate and smiled, "Thank you, Auntie Mac!"

As Mac returned to the table, the Admiral handed her another plate. "You're a sucker for the little guy, aren't you?" he teased.

"Sure am," she sighed. She picked up another hamburger bun and she and AJ walked over to the grill together. "Have you heard from..." Mac started to say.

AJ interrupted her. "No," he frowned.

"I was going to say, Francesca, Sir," Mac said softly.

AJ turned to look at Mac. "I'm sorry, Mac. I guess I'm still a little..." he sighed and didn't finish his thought. "Yes, I spoke with my daughter yesterday morning," AJ smiled. "She's doing fine. Said to tell you hello, in fact."

"That was sweet of her," Mac intoned.

"How would you like your burger, Admiral?" asked Bud. "I have medium rare and medium ready; well done will take just another minute or so."

"I'll take medium rare, Bud; thank you," AJ replied.

"The same for me," Mac looked at the burgers hungrily and licked her lips in anticipation.

"So, Admiral, I thought that Meredith would be here today?" asked Harm as he walked up behind them with his own plate and empty bun.

AJ shook his head. "Nope." He headed for the picnic table to doctor up his burger.

Mac turned to Harm and said softly, "She left last week to teach in England. The engagement is off."

"No!" "Oh, man..." Bud and Harm said at the same time.

"He's still smarting from it, I think, so it's best not to say anything just now," Mac told them.

They nodded their agreement. "I can certainly understand that," Harm muttered.

Once everyone had their hamburgers fixed the way they wanted them and had filled their plates with all the extras, they sat out in the yard on the lawn chairs to eat. As Bud took another bite of his burger, he looked up at the Admiral and said, "So, Admiral, did you talk to your daughter again since yesterday morning?"

AJ shook his head. "Not yet. I thought I'd call her again today and try to talk her out of this nonsense."

The others looked up. "Nonsense, Sir?" asked Harm.

"What's she involved in, Admiral?" asked Sturgis. "Not something dangerous, I hope?"

"Match.com," AJ replied, almost caustically. Mac flinched inside as she heard him speak. "For some reason, my daughter has the idea that she's going to meet her 'Mr. Right' on the Internet. So she's joined this Match.com thing," he shook his head. "I don't know... I just can't see that it's a safe way to meet anyone."

Harriett watched Mac's reaction, but neither of them let on. Harriett knew Mac didn't want anyone to know she was a member of an online dating service. Harriett wondered if Mac was on Match.com or another one. She hoped it was Match.com. She had been quite nervous about Mac's involvement, until the Admiral called on Saturday. When he and Bud hung up, Bud had immediately logged on the Internet and researched the company thoroughly.

"Well, Sir," said Bud, "I did do a lot more looking at the company this weekend, and I can't find anything to worry about. As long as a woman, or a man for that matter, uses good judgment and doesn't give out personal information before they are completely comfortable with another member of the service, they should be just as safe as meeting someone in another way... like a bar or a park..."

AJ nodded, "I found the same thing in my research, Bud. I guess I just don't like the idea of my daughter using the Internet to find a mate."

Harm chuckled. "I hear some of the questions they ask are pretty raunchy."

Mac bit her tongue so she wouldn't reply. AJ was glad that Bud piped up first... AJ almost gave it away that he'd created his own profile!

Bud replied, "No, Sir. I went through and actually created a profile yesterday so I could read through all of the questions. None of the questions are raunchy. In fact, the answers can't be either.  They actually monitor the profiles. Any new profile or changes to an existing one are reviewed by the people at Match.com before they're posted. And if there's anything that shouldn't be there, they don't post it. They're very clear about that."

"You created a profile, Bud?" questioned Sturgis.

"Created, Sir. Not submitted. I don't want anyone but Harriett," Bud grinned.

"Good answer, Bud!" laughed his wife.

"I don't know," said AJ. "I guess it's okay; I just worry about her."

"As any father would, Sir," said Sturgis.

AJ sighed, "I suppose so."

Harriett stuck her head in Mac's office.  "You have a minute, Colonel?" she asked.

Mac looked up and smiled, "Sure!"  As Harriett walked in, Mac continued, "Thanks again for yesterday.  The cookout was such a good idea and such fun.  Have a seat."

"I'm glad you enjoyed it, Ma'am.  We certainly did," Harriett replied as she sat down heavily.  "But I didn't get to talk to you privately to ask about your dates this weekend," she added.

"They both sorta fell flat," Mac replied sadly.  "But I haven't given up yet.  Had another note last night that looked promising."

Harm knocked on the doorframe, "Time for staff meeting.  You two coming?"

Mac looked up.  "Oh!  You're right!"  Harriett pulled herself back up and waddled to her desk to gather her papers for the meeting as Mac grabbed the files she wanted to take in the conference room with her.

The Admiral was already in the conference room as the last of the staff entered and took their seats.  Just as he was about to begin the meeting, the Intercom buzzed.  Harm was the closest to the phone set, so he punched the button, but the Admiral spoke, "What is it, Tiner?"

"Admiral, Ms. Cavanaugh is calling for you.  She's on Line 3, Sir," Tiner said.

"Tell her I'm in a staff meeting, Tiner."

"But Admiral, she's calling from England!" Tiner informed him.

"That would be because she lives in England now, Tiner.  If she wants to talk to me, tell her to call me at home in the evening.  Not at the office," AJ snapped.

He then nodded to Harm to disconnect the Intercom, and he did so just as Tiner was saying, "Aye, aye, Sir."

AJ took a cleansing breath before he looked around the table at his officers.  He really wished now that he hadn't taken Meredith around the office and informed everyone that they were engaged.  If he hadn't, he wouldn't now have to tell them it was off.  "In case you haven't heard or figured it out yet, my engagement is off.  I don't want to hear anything more about it.  Understood?"

Before anyone had the chance to respond, he began the meeting.  Everyone was a little subdued; they were all hurting for their CO... their friend.  It was quite obvious that the break-up was not his choice.

The meeting over, everyone filed out of the conference room.  AJ and Mac were the last two to leave.  "Admiral, would you like me to call Meredith?" she asked quietly.

AJ looked up sharply  "And why would I want you to do that?" he snapped.

Mac breathed in deeply and said, "So that perhaps she won't call you this evening?"

AJ sighed and replied quietly.  "I really would prefer she not call, Mac.  She didn't bother to let me know she arrived safely... and she's been over there for 10 days.  That was more than enough time.  I have no desire whatsoever to remain friends with her.  So I'd prefer not to have any communication from her."

"Not even friends, Sir?" Mac asked, surprised.

"Maybe if she hadn't accepted my proposal, I'd feel differently about that.  Probably would, in fact.  I'm still friends with a number of women I was involved with over the years.  But I wasn't engaged to any of them.  There's just something different about that," he mumbled.

"I can understand that, Sir.  I never hear from Mic either.  Don't guess I really want to," Mac confided.

AJ smiled sadly.  "I finally broke my own rule and proposed... and she throws it back in my face," he shook his head.

"Your own rule, Admiral?" Mac questioned.  She could just imagine what that rule was.

"Let her do the proposing!" he smirked.

Mac laughed.  "Oh!"  That was totally different than she expected.  "So you're not against the idea of marriage... you just don't want to be the one who proposes?" she clarified.

"You got it, Mac.  And I won't do it again.  That's a given," he assured her as they left the conference room.

Mac decided to call Meredith and try to convince her not to call the Admiral again.  He didn't need any more stress or frustration in his life.

Mac decided to check her e-mail again before taking a shower and climbing in bed. She'd never received so many e-mails as she had since she joined Match.com. And she hadn't even initiated any of the contacts so far! She thought about the conversation they'd had on Sunday afternoon. "Well, it's my life," she muttered under her breath as she logged on. She was surprised to find another 12 e-mails from new men wanting to meet her. She read through them all, perused their profiles, and sent a canned reply to all but one of them:

Thanks for taking the time to write me. After looking at your profile, I don't really see a match between us. Good luck in your search for the right woman.

And she signed them all, "Theropod". The one she didn't send the canned reply to, she wrote a more personal response requesting a little more information about him. His profile was rather skimpy, but what was there sounded pretty good.  "And I kinda like his username.  AreU4Me.  Cute."

"I should do a search of my own tonight," she decided. "I haven't done one of those since last week." She went through the Match.com search windows, specifying her preferences. Because she was so specific with this search, only 4 men's profiles matched her criteria. She read through the first one. He sounded good, but his picture showed him covered with facial hair. Mac frowned. "I really prefer a clean-shaven man." She went on to the next profile, then the next... deciding against both of them.

The fourth profile caught her eye: "Let's hit a home run!" Mac laughed as she read the headline aloud... and then the username: "Strike1Ball3". She grinned, "This guy's really into baseball!" As she read his profile, he sounded better and better. "Hmm, maybe I should write him." She knew his profile hadn't come up on her search last week, so he had to be new. "Maybe I'll give him a little time to find and write to me," she decided.

Mac went to the bathroom and started the water running in the shower. As she stripped out of her clothes and stepped under the spray, she thought to herself, ' Maybe I should write him. I mean, none of these other guys have worked out, and they've all been the ones to write me first. Maybe if I initiate something with someone who came up in my search results, it'll have a better chance. I can start it out on the footing that I want. The speed that I want.' The grime of the day washed off, she toweled dry and slipped into her nightgown. "I'll do it!" she decided.

Mac sat back down in front of her computer and began typing. She decided to make her note short and to the point. She didn't care for long notes as the first communication; she preferred the shorter ones. Maybe this guy would, too.

Hi! I saw your profile on Match.com and thought I'd drop you a note. Your profile sounds wonderful and very much like what I'm looking for in a man. I'd ask, therefore, that you take a look at my profile. If you like what you read, please let me hear back from you. Thanks! ...Theropod

Mac reread the note and clicked on Send. Off it went. "Oh, I hope he answers me!" she mumbled to herself.

AJ still hadn't been able to reach Francesca. He'd been trying to call her since he got home from the Roberts' house on Sunday evening. Every time he called, he got her answering machine. He had tried a couple of times this evening, to no avail. Then his own phone rang, and he was tied up for several hours. Now that he was finally free again, it was far too late to try calling her. He decided to write her a quick e-mail. He powered on the computer and then logged on to his e-mail.

"What on earth?" he muttered as he saw three notes with odd names. He opened one of them and starting reading it, surprised to find that it was a response to his Match.com profile. "What the hell is this? I didn't submit that thing!" He quickly logged on to Match.com and found that he had, indeed, submitted his profile. It had been reviewed, approved, and posted earlier in the day. "God, no!" he groaned.

Curiosity got the better of him, and he went back to the first note. It was long. Too long. "I'll bet she'd never shut up!" he chuckled. He went to the next note. That one was short. Too short. " 'Check me out?'  That's all it says?" AJ asked in wonder. He shook his head and opened the third note. "Theropod? What the hell is a theropod?" he mumbled. "Hmm, this one looks... interesting. Short, to the point... but flattering." AJ decided to take a look at her profile.

"Voluptuous woman seeks bald man," he roared when he read her headline.  "5'11", hmm? Nice height. Strategically placed tattoo? That sounds... intriguing," he grinned. Then he read her best feature and laughed. "Her chest!?" He went to the next window and chuckled when he saw that she offered to belly dance. "Yes, Theropod, I would very much like to see you belly dance!" He continued reading and smiled broadly when he read 'The Admiral's Bride - don't I wish!!' "Maybe this girl is someone I would want to know," he thought aloud. "Don't be ridiculous, Chegwidden! You are NOT answering this." He read further. "She's a lawyer! But she doesn't want to talk about work? That's a first." He laughed when he read her comment about not letting anyone else drive her car. "That part sounds like Mac!"

He laughed again at the absurdity of the whole online dating idea. Shaking his head, he logged off and shutdown his computer. "Damn! I forgot to write Francesca!" he realized. "Oh well. Guess I'll do it tomorrow," he said as he let Random out the back door.

As soon as Mac walked in her apartment, she went immediately to the computer and turned it on.  While it powered up, she went in her bedroom and changed out of her uniform.  "I hope he answered me," she said to herself.  "I really hope he answered me."  She was glad she hadn't mentioned to Harriett about the note she sent to Strike1Ball3.  What if he didn't reply?  That would be a little embarrassing to have to admit.

She went back to the computer and logged on.  She looked through all her new e-mails; there were five notes from guys she hadn't heard from before, one note from the man she requested more information from, but nothing from Strike1Ball3.  "Rats," she said.  She tried not to get discouraged.  "Maybe he's not home from work yet and hasn't even seen my note.  I did send it rather late last night. And maybe he doesn't check his e-mail every day; not everyone does."

She opened the note from AreU4Me and read it silently.  "Hmm, he does sound interesting," she decided.

AJ thought off and on all day about the note he received from Match.com.  He'd even looked up the word theropod in the dictionary.  "Carnivorous dinosaur," it had said.  He had laughed when the image of a belly-dancing Tyrannosaurus Rex with a tattoo on its hind quarters appeared in his mind's eye.

He let the dog inside, and before he knew it, he found himself in front of his computer reading Theropod's profile again.  "She adores a bald head," he repeated her words aloud.  "I guess she must; even her headline says that."  He read through her entire profile... three times.  Then he read her note to him again.  Then he decided to read his own profile again.  Maybe he had put something in there that wasn't quite accurate.  But no, it was more on target than he remembered.

He sighed inwardly.  "Maybe I could just reply to her.  Just once.  And see what happens."  He decided to go for it.

Hello, Theropod. Yes, I do like what I read in your profile. If you would like to correspond and see if we have other things in common, I would like that. If you are still interested, let me know.  --Strike1Ball3

AJ read his note through again, and decided it was sufficient.  He clicked on Send.  "Sure hope that wasn't a mistake," he muttered as went to his bedroom to prepare for bed.

Mac was still working on the computer when it chimed indicating that she had just received new mail.  She had ignored the chime the past two times it rang; she was too busy preparing her brief.  But this time, she decided to check her in-basket.  "It's him!" she exclaimed, seeing the note from Strike1Ball3.

She quickly opened the note and read his response.  "Hmm, interesting.  Didn't give me any new information... but then, I didn't really ask for any.  He answered my question and that was all," she realized.  She decided to reply right away.  Maybe he'd still be logged on and see it yet tonight.  'Not likely,' she thought.  But it was worth a try.

Thanks for your reply, Strike!

I'm rereading the description of your ideal match, and I must tell you that I, too, am looking for that special someone to be my best friend and lover... and hopefully, husband.  I am a romantic at heart, though I try to keep that a secret at work. ;-)  I do have an adventurous spirit, but I'm not a daredevil.  I'm willing to try new things... to a point.
I am financially stable and believe I am emotionally stable, as well.  I was engaged a couple of years ago, and I went through a difficult period right after we broke the engagement.  But all is well now.  Like you, I enjoy a good dinner companion... dining out is great, so is eating in (as long as you don't expect me to cook!).
I'm glad you enjoy lazing around as much as getting up and going.  So do I.  In fact, I dream of long moonlight walks along the beach. I love walking on the beach, especially at sunrise and late at night when the stars are sparkling in the sky.  Tell me, what do you dream of?
...Theropod

Mac read through her note again.  "Maybe it's a little too much there at the end?" she wondered.  "Oh, what the heck!  It's much less forward than most of these guys have written me on their second notes!"  She clicked on Send.

AJ was in the kitchen getting the coffee pot ready for in the morning when he heard a loud chime.  "What the hell is that?" he asked Random.  She barked in response.  AJ knew it wasn't the doorbell or the phone.  He couldn't imagine what he now had in the house that would chime.  He walked back into the living room and looked around.  Nothing.  He walked into his study and saw the computer screen still on.  "I thought I turned that thing off," he muttered as he walked around his desk to shut down the computer.  As he moved the mouse, he noticed the New Mail button flashing on his screen.

Instead of shutting down right away, he opened his in-basket.  "Theropod!"  He was surprised at his delight in seeing another note from her.  AJ immediately opened the note and read.  "Well, I'll be..." he breathed.  Not quite knowing how he wanted to reply, he decided to shower and get ready for bed.  Then he'd answer.  He thought of her while he showered, wondering if he'd ever actually meet her.  If they'd ever take a shower together.  "Geez, Chegwidden!  Getting a little ahead of yourself, aren't you?" he berated himself.

He sat in front of the computer again and began typing.

Hello, Pod!  I was surprised to see your note arrive so quickly.  I guess you must take after the theropods in more ways than just your food preference!  They were, perhaps, some of the fastest creatures on earth during their time.

So, you're not much of a cook?  That's okay.  I love to cook.  Especially Italian dishes, but I do it all.  I'm looking back through your profile now (it is my turn, after all!), and I'm glad to know that looks aren't important to you.  I'm not much to look at.  Although, the fact that you like a bald head is in my favor.
You mentioned wanting to find a man who knows what he wants out of life and isn't afraid to go after it.  I'd have to say that pretty well describes me -- with work anyway.  But in deference to your not wishing to discuss work, I'll leave it at that.  I don't have a lot of baggage.  I was divorced at a young age and have only one (grown) daughter who lives abroad.
I do treat women with respect and equality, not because I know most women want that, but because women deserve that every bit as much as men do.  I'd like to think I could also make you feel feminine and special.
Your dreams of moonlight walks on the beach sound wonderful; perhaps you'd let me share that dream with you?  --Strike

Mac was just ready to sign off and power down her computer when the new mail chime sounded again.  "It couldn't be," she told herself.  But she checked anyway.  "It's him!" she said excitedly.  She opened his note and read it.  "Oh wow... this guy is too good to be true!"

AJ sorted through the mail while Random ate her dinner.  "Hey, girl!  Want to go for a walk?" he asked her.  She wagged her tail.  As the pair walked down the street, AJ mulled over the notes he'd exchanged with Theropod last night.  There wasn't a lot said, but enough that they both knew each had sparked an interest in the other.

AJ had some thinking to do.  He really wasn't sold on this whole idea of an online dating service.  And he certainly never expected to use a dating service of any kind himself.  But Pod, as he thought of her now, intrigued him.  He wasn't quite sure why.  He was concerned that it might simply be a rebound effect from Meredith... and that any woman who flattered him would attract him.  If that was the case, he certainly did not want to continue exchanging notes with this woman.  That wouldn't be fair to her... or to him!

He didn't really think that was the case, though.  AJ had never had a problem before when a relationship ended.  Well, except for Marcella... but that was different.  She was his wife and the mother of his child.  Of course that one affected him.  And then there was Laura.  Yes, he had to admit that one hurt a lot, too.  But she was killed!  Murdered in his place!  Of course it affected him.  But Meredith?  Granted, he'd never had a broken engagement before, but still, he decided that no, he wasn't on the rebound.  He was over her.  'In two weeks?' he thought to himself.  'I wonder how much I really loved her if I'm over her this soon?'

They returned to the house, and AJ powered on the computer.  He hoped there would be a note from Pod.  He wasn't disappointed.  He looked at the time and date stamp on the note.  "She wrote this last night after mine?" he was surprised.  But pleased.  She seemed excited.  That was good.  He read the note:

Hello again, Strike!

I'm impressed that you know what a theropod is.  Or did you have to look it up?  Come on now, confess!  Actually, if you did, it impresses me even more.  I've heard from numerous men in the last month on Match.com, and not one of them has mentioned my username.  Which tells me they don't have a clue what a theropod is!  For you to know, or take the time to find out, tells me a lot about you. ;-)

I'd be delighted to share my moonlight walk on the beach with you, Strike. Perhaps you would hold my hand or slip your arm around my shoulders?  I'm a touchy-feely kind of person in my personal relationships.  Does that bother you?  I hope not, because it isn't something that's likely to change.

Maybe when we finish our walk, we could sit on the sofa and watch an old movie together?  I'm a huge fan of old movies.  And there's no better way to watch a movie on TV than while snuggled up against a man's chest with his arms around me.  Mmm, nope... no better way.  And if his hands start to wander... well, maybe I don't care so much about the movie after all.  I hope I haven't shocked you.  And I really hope to hear from you again soon.

...Pod

AJ groaned as he read the last paragraph.  "Not shocked, Pod... surprised, maybe... thrilled, certainly."  He got up to get a soda before he composed his reply.

Oh, Pod!  Let me assure you, I am definitely a toucher.  If I'm in a room with you at any time, I will touch you.  Your hand, your arm, your shoulder.  If I get close enough, and you have no objections, I would put my arms around you and give you a hug.  I might even steal a kiss.  I have always enjoyed long, deep, slow kisses.

I would love to wander and explore your wonderful body. I would run my hands over your back and neck and arms, and further if that was your desire.  I would hope that I could distract you from the movie and that you would enjoy our time together.  I would want you to feel safe, warm, and happy when you are with me, Pod.

I would hope that you would also feel the desire to explore me.  I have always enjoyed the loving touch of a woman, and I'm too much of a gentleman to stop a lady's adventures!

I hope you don't find my words too bold, Pod.  If I have overstepped myself in any way, please do let me know, and accept my sincerest apology in advance.  --Strike

P.S. I looked it up. Didn't have a clue what a theropod was!

Mac had been disappointed when she got home and checked her mail.  There was nothing from Strike.  There was, however, another note from AreU4Me.  He was proposing that they meet on Saturday night for dinner.  Mac debated on whether to accept his invitation.  "Just do it, Mac," she told herself.  "Strike might not ever write again.  You can't just sit around and wait for him."

She replied to AreU4Me and accepted his dinner invitation.  She did, however, insist that she meet him at the restaurant, just as she had all the others.

She finished reading another Judith McNaught novel, and set it on the coffee table.  She walked back over to the computer and moved the mouse to wake up the screen, hoping to find a note from Strike.  She wasn't disappointed.

Mac was tingling when she finished reading his latest missive.  "Oh, Strike, I think I'd let you touch me anywhere at all," she purred as she typed her reply.

Mmm, Strike!

While you're being bold, I will be, too.  I love to hold hands while sitting or walking together.  And I will play with your fingers while we sit.  I love to play footsie on the sofa or under the dinner table; be watchful for my foot as it slips up under your pant leg at dinner.  I'm also a cuddler and love to be touched in all the ways you mentioned, and more.  And I love to touch, too, and tease.  I tease *really* well.  And kissing.  Mmm, I definitely enjoy long, deep, passionate kisses.

You weren't too bold in your note (obviously!).  I just hope you don't think me too forward in mine.  This whole Match.com thing is very new to me.  But I guess maybe meeting over the Internet is a little less intimidating than a blind date.

AJ heard the chime again that he'd heard the night before.  This time he recognized it as coming from his study.  "Must be the computer," he decided, walking into the room.  The screen was blinking that he had new mail.  "Must be that it chimes when I have mail.  That's good to know."  He clicked on his in-basket, and sure enough, there was a note from Theropod.  He smiled as he opened and read it.  "Wow," he sighed.

Deciding not to wait, he immediately began typing his reply.

My dear sweet Pod, you say you've tried blind dates and they haven't gone well.  I am sorry.  If we get together, I'll have to expand your idea of a blind date and make it exciting for you!

First, we would blindfold each other with silk scarves.  Then we would explore each other slowly, softly, and sensuously.  And because we are both now without sight, we could explore each other and learn by sense of touch, smell, taste, and hearing.  Our game could go on for as long as you enjoyed it.

But I must warn you, I might get fresh, and I might even try to disrobe you for a closer, more intimate touch.  My lips would love to wander over your bare flesh.  Tell me, Pod, would you care for such a blind date?  --Strike

AJ clicked Send before he reread his note.  He was afraid he would delete it if he read it again first.  He couldn't believe they were being so bold with each other... so soon.  This was a woman he didn't even know!  He'd never even seen her picture!  'I've lost my mind,' was the thought that raced through his brain as he reread the note he had just sent. "She probably won't write back now," he said aloud. "You'll have scared her off. Bright move, Chegwidden."

Mac heard the chime and immediately switched to her in-basket.  "Yessss!" she giggled as she opened his note.  "Oh, my God!" she breathed heavily.  She read the note again, wondering at his last statement... it was a question really.  But was it?  Really?  Was he asking her for a date?  Or was he still talking "if" they got together.  His first paragraph said "if".  She hesitated, not quite knowing how to answer him.  Finally she knew what to say.

Oh, Strike!

I'm still panting after reading your note!  I do like your idea of a blind date... blindfolds.  Ingenious.   Maybe we can try that.  Mmm, sounds wonderful.

Before we go too far in our exploration of each other, though, I would like to know a little more about you.  How about we play 20 questions?  I'll ask you five questions, then you ask me five.

20 Questions - Round 1:

1. What kind of home do you live in?  Please describe it.
2. What kind of things turn you off?  What turns you on?
3. How do you like to spend a rainy afternoon?
4. How long have you been doing this Match.com business?  Have you actually met anyone in person yet through your ad?  Are you corresponding with or seeing anyone else right now?
5. How does your daughter feel about your being on Match.com?  Is she supportive of you?  Or does she even know it yet?

I'm looking forward to reading your answers.

...Pod

Mac was pleased with her note.  She let him know in no uncertain terms that she appreciated what he'd said.  But she also let him know that she wanted more information about him.  "Good.  I like it."  She clicked on Send. Because her note asked questions that she hoped he would answer in detail, she decided not to wait up for an answer. She made the right decision.

AJ was in the middle of a long, boring phone call with the SecNav when he heard the chime this time, so he wasn't able to read Pod's note right away.  He did make sure, though, that he read it before he went to bed.

"Hmm, smart woman," he said aloud.  "Good for you.  Ask more questions."  He hoped Francesca would do the same.  "Francesca!  Oh, my God!  What if someone writes her like I've been writing to Pod!?!" he worried. The questions Pod asked were going to take a little thought and time to answer, so he decided to wait until Friday night to reply.

Mac threw the last of her things in her duffle and turned the lights off in the bedroom and kitchen. She walked back to the computer to check her mail one last time. She hadn't heard the new mail chime, but she hoped to find something anyway. "Nope. Nothing. Damn," she muttered as she powered down the computer. When she first got home, she sent a note to AreU4Me canceling their date for Saturday night. Then she debated on whether to write Strike again to let him know she'd be out of town for a few days. When there was still nothing from him, she decided against it.

She closed up the apartment and headed for Andrews Air Force Base.

AJ got home considerably later than he expected. He'd spent most of the day at the Pentagon with the SecNav trying to squash a situation in Europe. It hadn't worked. So now Mac and Sturgis were on their way to Portugal.

AJ sighed as he powered on the computer. "Pod's probably not even home tonight. My guess is she's on a date." But that didn't stop him from answering her note. He just wished he'd gone ahead and answered it in the wee hours of the morning, right after he read it. He hadn't intended on its being this late when he got to it tonight.

My dear Pod, and dear to me you are quickly becoming!  I would be happy to answer your questions and ask you some of my own.  What a great idea! First my answers to your questions:

1. What kind of home do you live in?  Please describe it.
I live in a modest ranch-style house in a very wooded area.  It has two bedrooms, two baths, and a nice sized living and dining area combined.  The kitchen is large because I enjoy cooking.  There is a nice front porch and a large fenced backyard that my dog enjoys.  Sounds a lot like many other houses around the area, but it really suits me perfectly.

2. What kind of things turn you off?  What turns you on?
Turn-offs:  Smoking; sorry, but I can't live with a smoker.  Don't much care for body piercings either.  Ears are fine, preferably only one hole in each.  But nothing in the eyebrows, nose, mouth, belly button, or any other unmentionable place.
Turn-ons:  Oh yes!  Being touched by a woman, anywhere she wants to touch me!  Soft kisses, anywhere on my body.  Being hugged and having a wonderful woman whisper sweet nothings into my ear.  Having her tell me what she wants and how to please her.  Having her tell me that she wants me.  Those things definitely turn me on!

3. How do you like to spend a rainy afternoon?
Oh, that varies.  When I'm alone, I like to read or watch old war movies.  When I'm with a special woman, I enjoy taking a walk in the rain together, and then warming each other up when we get back inside.

4. How long have you been doing this Match.com business?  Have you actually met anyone in person yet through your ad?  Are you corresponding with or seeing anyone else right now?
To tell you the truth, Pod, I only joined Match.com this week.  I have received several notes from women, but only yours caught my attention.  So, no, I have not met anyone in person yet.  And no, I am not corresponding with or seeing anyone else right now.

5.How does your daughter feel about your being on Match.com?  Is she supportive of you?  Or does she even know it yet?
No!  My daughter does not know I'm on Match.com.  She would have a good laugh if she knew it, but I'd rather keep her in the dark about this, thank you!

Now, my questions for you, dear lady:

6. Do you want children, if you were to get married? Even to a man in his 50s?
7. Do you have any special places that you like to go for a weekend getaway?
8. You mentioned skinny dipping was a turn-on; care to elaborate?
9. What types of food do you like the best (and don't just say MEAT!)?
10. Is there anything that people do that really ticks you off?

My turn to look forward to your answers. --Strike

Mac dropped her duffle on the floor and literally ran to the computer, powering it on and wishing it to boot faster. When it finally came up, she immediately checked her e-mail. "Strike!" she thrilled. She read his note and felt goosebumps forming on her arms and the back of her neck. She was so exhausted, she didn't want to rush through her answers, so she decided to just send a quick reply tonight. She didn't want him to think she wasn't interested, and she hadn't been able to get to a computer at all over the weekend. She just hoped that he'd see this note before tomorrow night.

Sorry I haven't answered sooner, Strike. I had to go out of town rather suddenly for the weekend and only just got back tonight. I'm bushed, so I'm going to get some sleep now and answer your note tomorrow evening after work. That will give me time to think about your questions, too! I just have to tell you now, though... I loved your answer to my "turn-on" question!! And I will be most happy to be the one touching you and kissing you and hugging you and whispering sweet nothings in your ear... Mmm, what a lovely dream I'll be having tonight! Have a wonderful day tomorrow. ...Pod

AJ wasn't usually one to check his e-mail every day, but since he started conversing with Pod, he found himself not only checking it once in the evening, he left it on all evening. He was disappointed when he didn't hear from her for the entire weekend nor on Monday. 'I wonder if something I said or asked turned her off,' he thought to himself. 'Maybe she was just busy all weekend.' He muttered aloud then, "Yeah, she was probably on dates all weekend!"

AJ hadn't been in a terrific mood at the office yesterday, and today was looking like it was going to be the same. He decided to check his e-mail before he left home. Maybe, just maybe, there would be something from Pod.

Mac sat at her desk staring at the same line in the file she'd been looking at for the past 20 minutes. Her mind was not on work. It was on Strike and the notes they'd been exchanging.

She was happy that she had initiated the conversation with Strike.  All the other guys she'd chatted with from Match.com had been far too eager to meet her.  They didn't really want to get to know her first.  They wanted a personal relationship immediately.  Mac was pleased that Strike seemed content to get to know her online first.  Then, if and when they chose to meet each other, they'd already have a lot of common ground.  They'd know a lot about each other.  It wouldn't be so much like a blind date.  Mac giggled, remembering Strike's version of a blind date.

'Okay, so we're getting closer online than I expected to. So what? I'm still learning things about him. Why can't we have a little fun at the same time?' she reasoned to herself. But she also decided to keep Strike a secret. She would not be telling Harriett about this man. At least not until she met him. If she met him. "When!" she said with confidence.

"When, what, Colonel?" asked the Admiral as he stopped in her doorway.

Mac looked up, surprised. "Oh! Admiral!" she started to rise, but he waved her back to her seat.

"When, what?" he repeated.

"Nothing, Sir. I was just thinking out loud for a second," she blushed.

"And from that expression, I'd say it didn't have anything to do with that file in front of you," he teased.

Mac shook her head. "You'd be right there, Sir. It didn't." She got her composure back somewhat and said, "Did you need me for something, Admiral?"

AJ shook his head. "No, Mac. I was just passing your office, and I heard you blurt out 'When!'."

"So you decided to razz me about it, did you, Sir?" she teased, something very unusual for anyone to do to the Admiral.

He raised an eyebrow at her words and tone, but grinned in response. "Exactly."

She laughed delightedly. "I'm glad you did, Sir." AJ winked at her, turned, and left the bullpen. 'He's in a good mood today,' she thought happily. 'First one since Meredith left. That's good! And didn't Harm say he was a bear yesterday? I wonder what happened to cheer him up?'

Mac had to work late, so she was just getting home. She worried that if Strike had been online earlier and didn't have a note from her that he might not log on again tonight. She needn't have worried, though. She went right to work on her reply to his questions.

Hi, Strike!
I suppose we could start using our real names if you'd like to. But I think it's rather fun to know you only as Strike, and you know me as Pod. I'll let that be your call, though. ;-)
I'm glad you like the idea of the 20 questions. And thanks for answering mine so completely. As I said in my note last night, I really enjoyed your answers. Especially your "turn-ons". Well, and the rainy afternoon! Rather makes me hope it rains the day we meet! ;-) Here are my answers to your questions.
6. Do you want children, if you were to get married? Even to a man in his 50s?
That's a tough one. I've always wanted children, but I wouldn't want my husband to feel pressured about having them. If he didn't particularly want children at his age, whatever age that may be, I wouldn't insist. It's important that he want them as much as me if we decide to have them.

7. Do you have any special places that you like to go for a weekend getaway?
Mmm, I love the beach. I love the mountains. I love the Caribbean. (What'd you have in mind?)

8. You mentioned skinny dipping was a turn-on; care to elaborate?
I've only done it alone in a lake, far from civilization. Don't think I'd want to do it with just anybody. But with the right guy? Sounds dreamy! Let's find a lake!

9. What types of food do you like the best (and don't just say MEAT!)?
You're too funny! And you're right, my first response was MEAT! Okay, I do love meat; I also love all things chocolate. I'm a fan of Italian food, Mexican food, Chinese food. Actually, I'm just a fan of food. I love to eat! Good thing I have a fast metabolism or I'd be as big as the Goodyear blimp!
;-)

10. Is there anything that people do that really ticks you off?
I can't stand it when people are mean to animals, children, or elderly people. It also bugs me to no end when I'm with a man and he starts ogling another woman... even in a passing vehicle.  Oh, that rubs me the wrong way, and it's happened many, many times.  I don't look at other men when I'm out with someone, and I expect the same courtesy.

My turn! Actually, I'd like to hear YOUR answers to the questions you asked me!

AJ was in the kitchen when he heard the computer chime. He hurried into the study and was delighted to find Pod's note. He read it and quickly began his reply.

Good evening, Pod. I heard the computer chime and knew it was you. It made me smile. I agree with you; it is fun to use Strike and Pod. I suppose when we decide to meet, we might want to use our real names, but who knows? Maybe not! For now, anyway, let's continue as we are, if you're happy with that.
You said you went out of town rather suddenly. I hope everything is okay and it wasn't a personal emergency of any kind. I'm glad you're back safe and sound. I missed your notes.
You want me to answer my own questions, hmm? Okay. Here goes.
6. Do you want children, if you were to get married? Even to a man in his 50s?
Well, I certainly have no intention of marrying a man in his 50s, so this one doesn't apply! I'm kidding, of course. I'm the man in his 50s, obviously. I love children, and I would love to have more. My concern would be that I wouldn't necessarily be around to help with their upbringing. But if my bride wants children, I shall strive to fulfill her wish (and certainly enjoy myself in the process!).

7. Do you have any special places that you like to go for a weekend getaway?
I, too, love the beach and the mountains. The Caribbean is nice, too, but I actually prefer Bermuda. Another thing I enjoy is sailing. I have a boat, and I enjoy taking her out on the weekends. Is that something that would interest you?

8. You mentioned skinny dipping was a turn-on; care to elaborate?
Haven't done it since high school. But with you? Name the place and the time, and I'll be there! Actually, there's even a small lake behind my house. I've never gone swimming in it before, but I'll certainly check it out this weekend!

9. What types of food do you like the best (and don't just say MEAT!)?
I knew you were a meat lover! I am, as well. I also love Italian food. Lots of others, too. Sounds like we're very compatible in our diets... and lots of other things. I'm glad.

10. Is there anything that people do that really ticks you off?
I can assure you, Pod, that my eyes will not stray from you when we are together. How rude of the men you have known before! Men not showing respect to women is probably the thing that rankles me the most. Women deserve to be treated with respect and equality. Of course, I'd also like to treat you to a little more than that.
;-)

Okay, you heard my answers to my own questions. Now it's your turn! As the last of the 20 questions, I'd like to hear your answers to the questions you asked me! --Strike

Mac quickly opened Strike's note and read it. She giggled as she read his answer about having children. And she thrilled at his answer about his eyes never straying from her. "Now for my answers," she said aloud.

Dear, dear Strike,
I'm glad you want to stick with Strike and Pod. It makes it so much more interesting, don't you think? And it thrills me to know that you were happy to receive my note this evening. (The weekend trip was a crisis with work, but nothing to worry about.)

I've never actually been sailing, but I would love to try it!  I do love the water, so I can't imagine not enjoying a sailboat.  I've always wanted to go on a pleasure cruise, but I haven't done that yet either.

Okay, now for my answers to my own questions.

1. What kind of home do you live in?  Please describe it.
I live in a one-bedroom apartment. Only one bathroom, too. But it has a good sized living room and dining area. The kitchen isn't very large, but then, I'm not much of a cook, as I mentioned before.
2. What kind of things turn you off?  What turns you on?
Turn-offs:  Well, we certainly agree on this one! I can't abide smoking either. And I don't much care for body piercings myself. My ears are pierced, but that's all. And I do have a tattoo, as I mentioned. But it's not visible to the average person. Only someone very special sees it. (Want a peek?)
Turn-ons:  Oh Strike! I think we must be meant for each other. I love being touched by a man, anywhere he wants to touch me!  And like you, too, soft kisses drive me wild!
3. How do you like to spend a rainy afternoon?
I love to read when it's raining outside. And if there's a covered porch where I can sit and not get wet but enjoy the smell of the rain, it's perfect! I love to walk on the beach in the rain the best of all. Sometimes, when it's raining on the weekend, I'll take off for the beach just so I can walk in the rain. Strange, I know. But I do it! And oh, I do like your idea of warming each other up when we get back inside!
4. How long have you been doing this Match.com business?  Have you actually met anyone in person yet through your ad?  Are you corresponding with or seeing anyone else right now?
I've been on Match.com for right at a month now. I'm having a lot of fun with it, and yes, I have met several men, none of whom I am still seeing. I haven't conversed with any of them in quite the way we are either. I like our way better. Definitely. Oh yes, a lot better.
:-)
5.  How does your daughter feel about your being on Match.com?  Is she supportive of you?  Or does she even know it yet?
Well, since I don't have a daughter, this question doesn't really apply to me! There's only one person who knows that I'm on Match.com (other than the guys I've met, that is), and she is sworn to secrecy!
Okay, Strike. What's next? It's your call.
...Pod

Mac wondered if that was what she really wanted to say. She backspaced over the last line of text. Then she typed it again exactly as before. And backspaced. And typed the same words yet again. This time she quickly clicked on Send, her heart in her throat. What would his call be? What would he want next? To meet? She could only hope.

AJ was just ready to power down the computer when it chimed. "Hot damn!" he grinned. He opened Pod's note. When he reached the end, he sat down heavily in the chair. "Oh, God. What now?" He wasn't sure what to tell her. "My call?" he muttered. "So how do I know what she really wants? Does she want to meet, or does she want to keep writing for a while longer?" He decided to go back through all their notes and reread them. Maybe that would help him to know how to answer her. Maybe it would help him know what he wanted himself!

It was well after midnight when he finished reading. And he was exhausted. It had been a very busy day. He decided to wait and answer her tomorrow.

Mac pushed the door open and walked into the ladies room.  "Hello, Colonel!" chirped Harriett.

Mac smiled, "Good morning, Harriett.  How are you feeling today?"

"Fatter than ever, Ma'am!" she groaned as she cradled her swollen belly in her hands.  "I will be so glad when this little one arrives."

"You still don't know what the sex is?" asked Mac.

Harriett shook her head.  "We decided this time to let it be a surprise.  I guess I was a little afraid that if it wasn't a girl, I'd be upset.  Then I was afraid if it wasn't a boy, that I'd fall apart all over again over losing baby Sarah."

Mac smiled sadly.  "Everything's going to be fine this time, Harriett.  It just has to be," she said, her eyes getting a little teary.

"Well, one thing I do know.  When this baby arrives, I'll be thrilled whatever it is!" Harriett laughed.  "So, tell me, what's been going on with you and... you know...?" she hedged, not sure if there was anyone else in the ladies room.  Normally she would have just bent over (as Mac did now) to check for legs in the stalls, but as big as she was, she didn't attempt it.

Satisfied that there was no one else in the room, Mac said, "I had to cancel a date with a guy for Saturday night because of going to Portugal.  I don't know if he'll reschedule or not.  I didn't have a note from him at all when I got back.  But I had a bunch of others from guys I hadn't heard from before," she giggled.  She so wanted to tell Harriett about Strike, but something held her back.

AJ got home from work and fed the dog.  He fixed his own dinner and ate.  He walked the dog.  He showered.  And all the while, his thoughts were on Theropod.  He wanted to meet her.  He desperately wanted to meet her. But he knew what would happen if he did.  At least, he knew what he'd want to happen.  And if she didn't want it... no, he didn't want to think about that just now.

He finally reached his decision on what to tell her.  He turned on the computer and replied to Pod's note.

Dearest Pod, I want nothing more than to meet you and hold you in my arms.  But I think it might be best if we wait a bit longer... get to know each other better, our likes and dislikes, our favorite restaurants, about our families, and eventually, even our jobs.  I fear that if I meet you now, the first thing I'll want to do is make love to you.

And I know exactly how I'd do it, too.  In fact, I can feel you now... close to me, as I slowly and softly undress you and carry you to your bed.  I would gently lay you on your stomach, as I undress to join you.

My dear sweet Pod, my fantasies with you are going wild, so I'd better stop before I have to excuse myself.

I'd like to continue our Q&As, if that's okay with you.  My turn, I hope?

1.  If you could do just one fun thing what would it be, and the sky is the limit?
2.  What is your favorite movie?
3.  What part of your job do you like least?  The best?
4.  What is (are) your favorite color(s)?
5.  What would make you more happy?
       a - A new sexy nightgown
b - A plane ticket to see someone you love
       c - A new TV set
       d - A weekend trip to a quiet spot
       e - A new puppy

I hope to hear from you soon.  --Strike

Mac was stunned as she read his note.  His second sentence had almost upset her, she had so hoped he'd want to meet her.  But when she continued reading, she was enthralled by his words.

Oh, Strike!
As I read your note, I felt a thrill go through me... almost as though I could feel your hands on my body.  I was breathless as you undressed me and pulled me to you.

My dreams of you have been rather provocative, too!  Sometimes we'll be sitting on the sofa, watching a movie... and your arms will be around me.  I shift slightly and lean in to you, moving my hand up and down along your leg.  Then sliding it further up... up... up your thigh until I'm touching you.  I reach my hand up and unzip your pants and slide my hand inside... and oh... I can't go on without embarrassing myself!

I'm game to continue our Q&A.  It will be that much more exciting when we do finally meet!  Now to answer your questions.

1.  If you could do just one fun thing what would it be, and the sky is the limit?
I have always wanted to ride in a hot-air balloon.  Well, you did say the sky's the limit!  Of course, I wouldn't want to do it alone.  Wanna come?

2.  What is your favorite movie?
That's a tough one.  I love so many of the old movies.  I guess my favorite movie of all time is "Random Harvest" with Greer Garson and Ronald Coleman. It is such a romantic movie, and I cry every time I watch it... first sad tears... and then happy tears.  Have you seen that one?

3.  What part of your job do you like least?  The best?
My job.  I know I said I didn't want to talk about work, but don't get me wrong.  I love my job, I really do.  The people I work with are absolutely fantastic.  But there is one aspect of being a lawyer that I don't care for... being given assignments that go against what I believe.  Like having to prosecute someone I know in my heart is innocent.  Or defending someone I'd swear was guilty.  But I'm not in charge, so I don't always get to choose my cases.  The best part of my job is my boss.  He is absolutely incredible.  He is so supportive, and even when he assigns me a case that he knows I don't want, he is there to help me... guide me... and encourage me. He's the best!

4.  What is (are) your favorite color(s)?
Red.  I love red.  And Navy blue.  That's a favorite of mine, too.

5.  What would make you more happy?
       a - A new sexy nightgown
b - A plane ticket to see someone you love
       c - A new TV set
       d - A weekend trip to a quiet spot
       e - A new puppy
ALL OF THE ABOVE!!!!
:-)   Okay, okay... I would love a new sexy nightgown, but what good would it do me if I was alone?  And if I wasn't alone, hopefully it wouldn't stay on very long!  I'd love to go visit my little sister, and I'd love to have a great big new TV... a flat screen, 36"!  A weekend trip would be wonderful (if you'd be going with me).  How about Bermuda?  And a new puppy?  I would dearly love a new puppy!!  I'd name him Strike!

Five new questions.  Hmm... okay, here you go:

6.  You indicated that you're divorced.  How many times?
7.  Who is your favorite movie actor?  Movie actress?
8.  Do you wear boxers or briefs (or something else!)?
9.  Have you ever lived outside the continental U.S.?
10.  Which side of the bed do you prefer?

Excitedly awaiting your reply and longing for your touch...  Pod

AJ heard the chime from his bedroom, and he hurried toward the study... tripping over Random lying on the living room rug and tumbling over the easy chair.  As he stood up, he thought about his actions.  "I can't believe I'm this excited about a... a pen pal!" he said shaking his head.  He sat in front of the computer and opened his e-mail.

Fifteen minutes later, he typed his reply.

Pod, all I can say is that your words have had a profound physical effect on me!!  Thank you!  Well it's late, and I've got a very early meeting in the morning, so I'll stop for now and write more tomorrow.  Your effect on me is still very strong; so much so that I certainly don't have to worry about turning over and falling out of bed tonight!  --Strike

AJ powered off his computer and thought about what he'd called her before he read this last missive.  "A pen pal?  I don't think so!"

Continue to part 3.
