JAG Headquarters
Falls Church, Virginia
The staff meeting went longer than usual, but Admiral Chegwidden finally dismissed his officers. Just as Lieutenant Roberts put his hand on the doorknob, the conference room door opened and Petty Officer Tiner entered. "Tiner, what were you doing, listening outside the door?" Bud joked.
"Excuse me, Sir," Tiner said to Bud. The officers filed out of the conference room as Tiner turned to the Admiral. "Admiral, there's a General waiting for you, Sir. Brigadier General Evan Douglas. He's been waiting since 1000 hours, Admiral."
"What does he want, Tiner?" AJ asked, not giving any indication of recognizing the name.
"He said it was personal, Sir," Tiner replied.
"Personal? Douglas? Right," he mumbled. "Where is he?"
"Waiting in your office, Admiral."
AJ walked into his office. "General Douglas," he said flatly.
Douglas stood. "Hello, AJ." AJ raised an eyebrow. "Admiral Chegwidden," Douglas corrected. AJ was, after all, a two-star; Douglas only had one.
"What brings you to JAG?" AJ asked him.
"You." AJ looked at him questioningly but didn't respond. "I owe you an apology. It's long overdue. And I thought that since I'm home for a few months, I'd stop by and deliver it. Better late than never," Douglas said. AJ still said nothing. He just stared at Douglas. "AJ, I really am sorry. It was a long time ago, and I was hoping that you'd let bygones be bygones. We were friends, once upon a time."
"That was a long time ago, too, Douglas," AJ replied, sitting down.
"AJ, a lot of time has passed. A lot of water's passed over the dam. Can't we at least be civil to each other now?"
"Why? Why now?" AJ asked. He knew Douglas wouldn't be lowering himself to apologize if it weren't in his own best interest to do so.
Douglas replied, "Can't it just be because I'm sorry?" AJ shook his head. "Okay; the truth then. I'm up for another star. And I'm doing my best to right the wrongs I've dealt people in the past. I don't want any of them to come back and bite me in the ass." AJ grunted. "Yea, I know. Great reason. But quite honestly, AJ, I never intended to..."
"Don't say it, Doug," AJ interrupted, standing up, again. "I know damn well you intended it. And you did it... quite successfully."
They were both quiet for a couple of minutes. "How is she, AJ? Do you ever see her? Talk to her?" Douglas finally broke the silence.
"She's fine," AJ replied shortly.
"And your little girl?"
"She's fine, too."
"AJ, I..." Douglas sighed. "I really am sorry, AJ. I don't know what else I can say... or do. There isn't anything..."
"You're right. There isn't. If there's nothing else, General Douglas, I have work to do," AJ said coldly.
Douglas nodded slightly. "Nothing else. Thanks for seeing me, Admiral." Douglas turned and let himself out.
Once he left, AJ turned and stared out the window. He was still standing there 20 minutes later when Colonel MacKenzie knocked on his door. When he didn't answer after her second knock, she opened the door and peered inside. "Admiral?" she said softly. "Do you have a minute, Sir?" AJ heard Mac's voice, but it didn't really register. He was still... almost in a trance-like state. "Admiral? Are you all right?" Mac asked from the doorway.
When he still didn't answer her, she stepped inside his office and left the door ajar. She padded quietly up behind him and laid her hand on his shoulder. She spoke very softly, "Admiral? Is there something you need, Sir?" She couldn't imagine what was wrong; she knew only that a General had been here to visit him. She hadn't heard to the name; maybe she should have asked. Maybe that would have given her an idea as to why the Admiral was in such a state. "Admiral?" she said, again.
When AJ finally turned to face her, Mac saw the traces of tears on his face and small wet spots on his shirt. AJ didn't even seem to know she was there. But suddenly he took her in his arms and crushed her to him. "I'm sorry, Darlin'. It wasn't because I don't love you. I do. Completely. I was drunk; I didn't know until the next morning... Sweetheart, please... you have to believe me. I love you more than life itself," AJ's words rushed from him.
Then he lowered his face to Mac's and covered her in kisses. He ran his tongue along the seam of her lips and she opened her mouth. He thrust his tongue inside and tasted her, sucking her tongue into his mouth. "Oh, Darlin'..." he whispered. "Marcella... my love..."
AJ moved his hands to Mac's breasts. He fondled her through her blouse. When he began to unbutton her uniform, Mac tried to pull away. "Admiral, no..."
"No, Baby... Don't leave me; don't be angry," AJ pulled her back into his arms and buried his face in her neck. "I can't live without you."
As suddenly as AJ had taken Mac into his arms, he released her and turned back to the window. Mac wasn't sure what to do. 'Should I leave? Should I try to talk to him, again?' Her quandary was short-lived; AJ turned away from the window and was startled to see Mac standing there so close to him.
"Colonel? Did you need something?" he asked abruptly as he took his seat.
Mac kept her position and replied, "Yes, Sir, I came in to request some time off. I was hoping to take Friday and Monday."
AJ nodded. "That'll be fine, Colonel."
"Admiral, are you all right now?" she asked, concern lacing her voice.
"What do you mean 'now'?"
"You were having a little difficulty a moment ago, Sir."
"Difficulty?" he barked. "What kind of difficulty, Colonel?"
"Not worth mentioning, Sir. You appear to be perfectly fine now; that's what matters. Thank you, Sir," Mac said.
"Dismissed, Colonel."
Mac left his office, turning the doorknob to let herself out. 'I didn't shut the door,' she remembered. Closing the door behind her now, she approached Tiner. "Tiner, did someone follow me into the Admiral's office just now?" she asked.
"Lieutenant Roberts, Ma'am. He walked in and came right back out, again. Looked a little pale, actually, Ma'am. And he told me not to disturb you and the Admiral," Tiner told her.
"Thank you, Tiner." Mac walked into the bullpen. "Bud? My office. Now," she said as she passed him standing at his wife's desk. Bud followed her into her office. "Close the door and have a seat."
Mac sat behind her desk. "Bud, I know you were in the Admiral's office a few minutes ago. What did you see?"
Bud's neck starting turning red and it rose up into his face. "Ma'am?"
"What did you see, Bud?" she repeated.
"Nothing, Ma'am."
"Bud, consider yourself on the witness stand. You wouldn't lie under oath. What did you see?"
"I saw the Admiral kissing you, Ma'am. And petting you," Bud added, lowering his eyes to his lap. "And unbuttoning your blouse."
"No you didn't, Bud," Mac informed him. "You saw him kissing and petting his wife." Bud jerked his head up and stared at Mac. "Marcella," she explained. "Bud, I don't know what happened to trigger it, but something did. When I walked in there, he was staring out the window. The next thing I knew he was holding me tightly and telling me that he loved me. Only he wasn't talking to me. He was talking to Marcella."
"Did he say that, Ma'am?"
"Yes, Bud, he did. He called her by name," Mac informed him. "Have you told anyone what you saw? Anyone, Bud?"
He shook his head. "No, Ma'am. I haven't said a word to anyone. Not even Harriett."
"Good. Please don't. I don't believe that the Admiral even knows what he did. When he released me, he turned back to the window. When he turned around, again, he was surprised that I was standing there. I really don't think he remembers it at all. It was like he was in a trance or something."
Bud nodded. "I won't say a word, Colonel. Do you think he's okay?"
"I hope so, Bud. I hope so. I sure wish I knew what happened to make him lose it like that. It was so completely out of character; he was so vulnerable..."

McMurphy's Tavern
Falls Church, Virginia
Admiral Chegwidden had been in a foul mood ever since General Douglas' visit on Monday. No one knew why, and only Tiner related it back to the General's visit. So the JAG staff were all surprised when they walked into McMurphy's and found their CO sitting at the bar.
"Admiral, what a surprise, Sir," said Commander Harmon Rabb.
AJ looked up to see his officers approaching him. He waved his arm to the seats surrounding him. "Have a seat at your own risk," he quipped. "As you can see, I'm not the best company tonight... as proven by the fact that no one's sitting anywhere near me."
Mac took the stool immediately to AJ's right. "I don't think you'll frighten us away, Sir. You've been trying to do that for years and it hasn't worked yet," she said lightly, smiling.
Harm took the stool on AJ's left, and the Roberts sat on the other side of Mac. "No, I guess it hasn't. Thank God," AJ smirked. "Don't know what I'd do without all of you," he said in a rare moment of melancholy.
"You won't have to find out, Sir," assured Harriett.
"Absolutely not," agreed Bud. "Will he, Commander?"
"No, Bud, he won't," Harm chimed in. "Barkeep! A round of beers, and the Marine will have a tonic water with a twist of lime."
"I've already had my limit, Harm, but thanks," said AJ. Then he thought better of it. "Oh what the hell; one more won't hurt."
"Admiral, no..." Mac said, reaching for the mug set before him. AJ looked up at her, startled. "If you've set a limit and you've reached it, you shouldn't have another. I know. Please, Sir." Mac's eyes pleaded with him.
AJ was shaken. He stared at Mac and mumbled, "What did you say?"
Mac began to repeat herself. "If you've set a limit..."
"No, before that," AJ interrupted her.
"I... I don't... know, Sir," Mac stumbled. 'Oh God, he's remembering.'
Bud piped in, "You said, 'Admiral, no', Colonel."
"Say it, again, Mac," AJ ordered.
Mac looked in his eyes and said very quietly, "Admiral, no..."
AJ's face blanched and he closed his eyes. "Oh God."
"Admiral? Are you all right, Sir?" asked Harm.
AJ opened his eyes and found Mac still next to him, her hand now resting on his shoulder. "Admiral? Why don't you let me drive you home, Sir? You don't look at all well."
AJ nodded. "I think that's a good idea, Colonel. Thank you."
"Can you make it to the car, Sir?" asked Bud.
"Of course I can make it to the car, Lieutenant," AJ snapped. He turned back around and faced Bud. "That was uncalled for, Bud. I'm sorry. Thank you for your concern." He turned back to Mac. "Let's go, Colonel."
Harm piped up. "Sir, if you'll leave me your key, Bud and I will bring your vehicle to your house later."
AJ reached in his pocket and pulled out his keys. He unhooked the key to the Escalade and laid it on the counter. "Thanks."
Mac and AJ settled themselves into Mac's Corvette and she headed for McLean. "Did you need to stop anywhere on the way home, Admiral?"
"It was you, wasn't it, Mac? It wasn't a daydream?" AJ said quietly. When she didn't answer him, he turned to face her. "Was it?"
Mac shook her head. "No, Sir," she whispered.
AJ groaned. "Mac, I'm so sorry..."
"Please, Admiral, don't apologize. You didn't know it was me. You thought I was Marcella, Sir. You didn't do anything to apologize for."
"Mac, what I remember is devouring your mouth and petting you. Hell, I even started to unbutton your blouse."
"But you stopped when I asked you to, Sir. Even though you believed I was your wife, you still stopped. Not many men would do that."
AJ looked up at her. "You know the wrong kind of men, Mac. Any man should stop if a woman asks him to. No matter if she is his wife."
Mac smiled. "I knew you'd be that kind of man, Sir. You always are in my..." she stopped. 'Oh God, I almost told him I dream about him!'
"In your what, Mac?" he pressed.
'I can't. I can't tell him that. Oh hell, it's obvious!' "In my dreams, Sir."
"Your dreams? You dream about me?" he asked incredulously. Mac nodded. In the dark, AJ could just make out her head movement to know her answer. "Nice to know," he said quietly, smiling to himself.
"Admiral, may I ask you a personal question?"
"How personal?" he queried.
Mac chuckled. "Actually, it's very personal. I wanted to know what triggered your flashback on Monday morning. I've never known you to react that way. Ever. And I've seen you in some pretty chilling and intense situations. Tiner said you'd had a visit from a General just before I went in to see you. Was it something the General said?"
"I'd rather not discuss it, Colonel," AJ replied formally.
"I'm sorry, Sir. I didn't mean to pry. I'm just concerned about you," Mac answered. They were quiet the rest of the way to his house. Just as Mac pulled into his driveway, she said, "Admiral, if you need to talk to someone, please don't hesitate to call me. You're a very special person in my life. And if I can be of any help at all, I want to. Please remember that... AJ," she said this last as she laid her hand lightly on his left knee and turned to face him.
They sat there thus for another minute in silence, neither of them moving. "Come inside, Mac. I'll make a pot of coffee," said AJ.

AJ handed Mac a mug full of hot coffee and they each settled on opposite ends of the sofa in his living room. They began making small talk, and after about 5 minutes, AJ said, "Are you sure you want to know about this, Mac?"
"I'm sure, Sir."
"You're here as a friend, Mac. As my subordinate, I wouldn't be telling you this."
Mac smiled. "I'm sure... AJ," she corrected.
He nodded his approval and got up to light the fire in the fireplace. When he settled back on the sofa, he began his story. "Doug and I were roommates at Annapolis our last year there. We were best of friends; closer than most brothers. After school, Doug went into the Marines, so we were never stationed together. But we still kept up. Hell, he was the best man at my wedding." AJ shook his head. "What I didn't know was how jealous he was over Marcella."
AJ shifted his position on the sofa and stared at the fireplace. After a couple of minutes, he spoke, again. "When Francesca was not quite two, I was sent off on a mission in 'Nam. I was gone for 6 months. I ran into Doug in-country, and we went out drinking one night. I was lonely. Really lonely. Young. Stupid. And drunk. Not a good combination." He played with his hands in front of him and hung his head.
Mac waited. She didn't speak; she didn't move, not even to sip her coffee. Not until he began speaking, again. "There was a girl serving the drinks. She kept flirting with me. She could tell I was horny. Hell, it was obvious. Doug kept pushing me at her, egging me on. I'm not saying it was his fault; it was mine completely. I followed her home and she invited me inside. The next part was his fault. Doug followed us... with a camera. I had no idea how much he hated me. All because of Marcella. Hell, he hadn't even met her until he came for the wedding! But he fell head over heels for her. Most men did. But most men weren't my best friend," he grumbled.
AJ stood and walked to the window and stared outside. "He took pictures of me with the girl. Very explicit pictures. And he mailed them to Marcella with a note. It said, 'See how much he misses you?'."
Mac gasped. "Oh, God! How could anyone be so cruel?" She got up and walked up behind him, laying her head against his back and putting her arms around his waist as though it was the most natural thing in the world. Neither of them flinched at the contact.
"When I got home after that mission, Marcella had taken Francesca and moved back to Italy. Her note said she missed her mother. But next to her note on the table was the envelope of pictures and the note from Doug. He hadn't signed it, but there was no mistaking his handwriting."
"Oh, AJ, I'm so sorry," Mac whispered.
"He's called me a few times over the years. I've always successfully avoided talking to him. Until Monday."
"Why did he come?" Mac asked quietly.
"He said he wanted to apologize. Like that would solve everything. He even had the gall to ask if I ever see her... and how she is," AJ spat. She felt something wet on her hand and knew he was crying.
Mac didn't know what to do to ease his pain. She still had her arms around his waist and was leaning against his back with her head against his shoulder blades. "AJ, what can I do? Tell me what you need," she whispered.
He turned slowly and cupped her face in his hands. "You've already done it. You were there when I needed you in my office. And you're here now, allowing me to vent." AJ lowered his face to her and kissed her gently. Mac moved her arms up around his neck, and he moved his to pull her closer to him. They pressed against each other and both knew they were in dangerous territory. "I think you'd better go now, Mac," he said as he lowered his mouth to hers once again.
"Mmm, yes, I should," she mumbled in his mouth before they stepped apart. AJ was helping her into her coat when they saw car lights shine in the window. "That will be Harm and Bud with your vehicle."
"They'll wonder why you're still here," AJ said.
"Making sure you're okay, Sir" she smiled as they walked outside.
"You're a special woman, Mac. Thank you for caring," AJ said quietly.

Mac walked into the break room to get her morning cup of coffee and danish. "Good morning, Admiral," she said seeing him pouring himself a cup of the steaming liquid.
"Good morning, Colonel," he returned. "Coffee?" he lifted the pot toward her.
"Yes, thank you." Mac held her mug out and AJ filled it with coffee. "Are there any danish this morning, Sir?"
"I stopped by Krispy Kreme and picked up a few dozen donuts. Will those do?" He chuckled as Mac quickly set her mug on the counter and grabbed a napkin.
She opened the large box and cooed as she selected a glazed donut. "Mmm, so good," she mumbled as she stuffed the donut in her mouth. AJ laughed outright. "Don't laugh! These are wonderful!" She reached out her hand toward AJ's mouth. "Want a bite?"
Both Mac and AJ were surprised at Mac's action, but rather than embarrass her, he leaned forward and took a bite of her donut. He chewed it slowly, their eyes boring into each other. Finally, AJ picked up a napkin and took a donut of his own. He took a bite of it and then offered a bite to Mac.
She smiled as she stepped toward him and put her mouth on his donut. AJ groaned unconsciously; his eyes dark with desire. Mac finally took a bite of the donut and chewed it very slowly as AJ watched her. Then he took a bite of the donut and chewed just as slowly; their eyes locked on one another.
AJ stepped closer to Mac. Mac took a step closer to him. Just as they were about to lower their heads to each other, they heard Bud's voice. "Sure hope there are some donuts this morning."
Mac quickly turned and picked up her mug of coffee just as Bud entered the room. "Good morning, Admiral. Colonel," he said brightly. "Beautiful day, isn't it?"
"That it is, Lieutenant. That it is," replied the Admiral.
"Gorgeous, Bud," said Mac, taking a sip of her coffee. "Thanks for the donuts, Admiral. They're delicious."
"Glad you're enjoying them, Mac," he said as they walked out and headed for their respective offices.

AJ walked out of his office to find an empty bullpen. "Where is everyone?" he barked.
Mac heard him and came out of her office. "Most everyone is at lunch, Sir. Tiner's around, though; he just had to run to the supply room for a minute. Did you want something, Admiral?"
AJ looked at Mac, "Yes, I do want something, Colonel," he said quietly. "Unfortunately, I can't have what I want." He turned and went back in his office.
Mac was stunned. 'He wants me! Oh God, he wants me!!' she thrilled at the thought.

Mac was just finishing up her work and cleaning off her desk so she could be gone for a long weekend, when Harm walked in. "So, the big date is this weekend?" he asked.
"Yes, Harm."
"And this guy is who, again?"
"Harm, I've already told you. His name is Evan, and I met him while I was stationed in Bosnia."
"So, he's a Marine, too, I take it?"
"Yes, Harm. He's a Marine, too."
"Rank?"
"He's a General now. When I met him, he was a Colonel," Mac replied.
Harm nodded his head and whistled. "I take it he wasn't commanding your unit, though."
Mac jerked her eyes up to meet Harm's. "No, Harm. He wasn't my CO. I wasn't in his chain of command."
"And you had a relationship?"
"Harm, this is really none of your business," Mac said, annoyed.
"You're right. It's not. I just want to be sure you don't get hurt. You're my best friend, Mac."
Mac thought back to what the Admiral had told her about him and his best friend from college days. "Harm, promise me something?" she said softly.
"Promise you what?" he asked, surprised at her change in tone.
"Promise me that you'll never be jealous of anyone I date. Or of anyone I might eventually marry."
"Mac, what is it? What's wrong?" Harm asked.
"Nothing. Like you said, we're best friends. I don't ever want to lose that."
"Why would we lose it, Mac?"
"Harm, we almost lost it when I was with Mic and you were with Renee. We're back, again, and I'm glad. I just don't want to lose you, again." Mac's eyes were getting teary. "Please promise me you won't ever be jealous."
"Okay, Mac. I promise," Harm said pulling Mac into his embrace and stroking her hair. They stood there for almost a minute before they heard the Admiral's gruff voice.
"Am I interrupting something?" Neither of them had seen him walk into Mac's office.
Harm released Mac instantly and she stepped back. "Sir!" "No, Sir!" they replied together.
"What's going on in here?" he barked.
"Just a touch of melancholy, Admiral. I'm fine now," replied Mac. She turned to Harm. "Thanks, Harm."
Harm smiled at her. "Anytime, Mac."
"Close the hatch on your way out, Commander," ordered the Admiral.
"Aye, aye, Sir."
Mac turned to AJ. "I'm sorry, Sir. I was..."
"Your eyes are red, Mac. You've been crying?" he interrupted her. "Why?"
"Not really, Sir. Just a bit teary-eyed. I'm fine, really," she replied.
AJ wasn't convinced, but he decided to let it pass. "What are you doing this evening?" he asked.
"Packing," she said as she finished putting her things in her briefcase.
"Packing? You going somewhere?" he chuckled.
"You do remember that I'm off tomorrow and Monday, Sir?" she asked.
"You are?"
"Yes, Sir. You granted my leave request on Monday, Sir."
"Oh. Yes, I remember. That was right after I almost popped you out of your blouse," he said huskily.
Mac blushed. "Yes, Sir. That would be the time."
AJ chuckled. "So, you're going away for a long weekend?"
"Yes, Sir. With an old friend."
"Female?" he hoped.
Mac lowered her head. "No, Sir. I don't have many old friends who are female."
"Romantic weekend then, eh?" he suggested, frowning.
"One can hope, Sir."
"Well, have a good time then, Colonel," AJ said. He turned and left her office quickly. 'Damn!'

"Tiner! Send Colonel MacKenzie in here," barked the Admiral over the intercom.
"Sir, Colonel MacKenzie is on leave today and Monday," Tiner responded.
"Damn, I knew that. Get her on her cell... No, never mind," AJ said shutting off the intercom. He stood up and paced the room, forgetting about work. "Why the hell did I ever agree to go to this thing this year? I've never gone before. I've always had an excuse. Why the hell didn't I schedule a trip so I wouldn't be here for this one? Damn!"
The intercom buzzed and AJ punched the button. "What is it, Tiner?"
"Sir, the Colonel is Line 2."
"I told you not to..."
"I didn't, Sir. She just happened to call in," Tiner hurried to explain.
"Okay." AJ punched Line 2. "Why are you calling in on your day off, Colonel?"
Mac laughed, "My date's late. And I just thought I'd call and check up on you. You didn't seem quite like yourself yesterday. You okay?"
"Just fine, Mac. So, your date is late. You're involved with someone, again, hmm?" AJ asked her.
"Not really. I haven't seen him in several years. It's someone I knew while on my tour in Bosnia," Mac explained.
"You haven't seen him since then and you're spending the weekend together? Mac, are you..."
"We were close in Bosnia, Sir," Mac interrupted.
"Close?"
"Very close, Admiral."
"I see. Well, I hope you have a pleasant weekend, Mac."
"I'll have my cell phone with me. If you need me, call me," she told him.
"Mac, I'm not going to call you unless it's a work-related emergency," AJ replied. "You're on leave."
"I thought I was your friend and confidant?" she whispered.
"You are, Mac. But I wouldn't want to intrude on your romantic weekend. Wouldn't be fair. Friends don't do that," he informed her. He heard her doorbell ring.
"He's here."
"I'll let you go. Have a good time. See you next week."
Mac hung up the phone and opened her door. "Evan!" she smiled.
He stepped inside her apartment and swept her up into his arms, almost smothering her in kisses. "Mac, you are even more gorgeous than you were in Bosnia, if that's possible!" Mac blushed. "You ready to go?"
"Been ready for 37 minutes," she answered.
"I'm that late?" he laughed. "Sorry. Traffic. Didn't leave the base early enough." He looked around. "This your only bag?" he said as he picked up the suitcase sitting by the door.
"My dress bag is hanging on the bedroom door. I'll get it after I put my coat on." Mac reached for her coat and handed it to Evan. He took it and draped it over his arm. "Evan, I need to put that on," she said.
"Oh. Then why'd you hand it to me?" he asked, handing it back to her.
Mac took it and put it on by herself. 'What a difference in men. AJ even holds my coat for me at work... any woman's coat. He's such a gentleman. Even Harm does. Not Evan. Is he too good for it or what?' she thought to herself. She took her garment bag off the door, picked up her purse, and they left.

Evan checked them into the hotel and the porter showed them to their room. It wasn't a large or fancy room. There was only one queen-sized bed. Mac decided that Evan was not only not much of a gentleman, he was cheap!
The porter had hardly closed the door when Evan grabbed Mac around the waist and pulled her down on the bed with him. He devoured her mouth and grabbed at her clothing to get it off of her as fast as he could. "Come on, Mac, help me. I want you now!" he growled.
Mac giggled. 'Maybe we will have fun after all!' she thought.

Mac tried to turn over in the bed, but she found herself locked in Evan's arms. She tried to wiggle free, but all she succeeded in doing was making herself more uncomfortable. "Evan," she said softly. "Evan." He didn't stir. She jabbed him with her elbow. "Evan!" Nothing. "Damn, I'd forgotten how badly he snores. And what a sound sleeper he is." She jabbed him, again. "Evan!" He pulled her tighter to him. "Evan, I need to get up!" she almost yelled.
He finally woke up enough to turn over and released her.Mac got out of the bed and walked into the bathroom. She closed the door and turned on the shower. "Why do I feel so dirty after I have sex with him? I never feel that way with anyone else. But always with Evan. I don't get it." Mac finished her shower and walked back into the room wrapped in a towel. Evan was sitting on the edge of the bed.
"Why do you always take a shower after we make love, Mac?" Evan asked her.
"I don't know. I just always want one," she replied. 'Can't very well tell him I feel dirty.'
"Come back to bed," he ordered.
"Evan, we've been in bed all day."
"And that's a problem because...?"
Mac gave up and climbed back in the bed.

Mac was awake and dressed when Evan opened his eyes. "And just where do you think you're going at his hour?" he asked.
"Running. Wanna come?" she asked.
"Hell, no. I'm on leave."
"So am I."
"So come back to bed."
"I need to run, Evan."
"You need to come back to bed," he insisted.
Mac put her hand on the doorknob. "I'll be back in an hour or so."
"Mac! I want you to come back to bed now."
Mac turned to look at him. "Evan, I said I'm going running. Now if you'd like to join me, fine. If not, that's fine, too. But don't try to order me back to bed or you'll find that I don't get back in your bed for the rest of the weekend," Mac said testily. She jerked the door open and walked out. "Of all the nerve!" she said to herself as she took the stairs down.
Mac returned to the room almost two hours later. She found Evan sitting in the side chair with his feet propped up on the bed. As she entered the room, he stood up. "Have a good run?"
Mac nodded. "Yes, I did." She headed to the bathroom to take her shower. Evan reached out and took her hand.
"Mac, I'm sorry for the way I acted earlier. I wasn't really awake. I wouldn't have..."
"Evan, you've always ordered me around. I'd forgotten. Well I'm older now. And wiser. And I don't put up with it. So if you want me to stay, you'd better shape up," she told him.
Evan seemed to weigh her words. "Okay. I'll be a perfect gentleman."
"This I have to see," she mumbled.
"And I'll start right now. I'll show you how a perfect gentleman makes love to his woman." Evan pulled Mac into his arms and laid her down on the bed.
Mac flinched at his calling her 'his woman'. "Evan, I need a shower. I just ran..."
"You'll take a shower when we finish. Why bother taking one now?" he asked.
"I smell!"
"You certainly do," he growled as he pulled at her clothes.
"Evan, you're a beast!" Mac laughed, giving in to his desires.

Mac and Evan walked across the yard toward Bancroft Hall. Evan pointed out many of the buildings as he gave Mac the grand tour of his alma mater.
"Colonel MacKenzie?" she heard a voice call her from behind. Mac and Evan stopped and turned around to see who called her. He was a Midshipman. "You are Colonel MacKenzie, aren't you?" he asked.
Mac smiled and nodded, "Yes, I am." 'Who is he? I should recognize him. That accent...'
"I thought so. I almost didn't recognize you out of uniform, Ma'am. You probably don't remember me. I'm..."
"Midshipman Buchanan," Mac finished. "Of course I remember you. How are you?" she extended her hand in greeting.
Buchanan took it and shook her hand. "I'm just fine, Ma'am; thank you. It's such an honor to have you here on campus, Ma'am."
"Thank you. Oh, pardon me. Midshipman Buchanan, may I present..." Mac turned to find that Evan had walked on ahead. "Oh well," she shrugged. "So how are you and Midshipman Morris getting along these days?" she asked.
"Just fine, Ma'am. We're good friends now. We're even hoping to be able to room together next year. We both want to be SeALs. We actually have a lot in common. Except our ancestry," he chuckled.
Mac grinned. "Actually, you have that in common, too. Your great-great grandfathers may have fought against each other, but they were in the same war. That's common ground."
"You have a point there, Ma'am."
Evan called, "Mac! Are you coming?"
"I'm sorry, Ma'am. I didn't mean to keep you. It was a pleasure to see you, again, Colonel."
"Thank you, Mr. Buchanan. Tell Mr. Morris I said hello." Mac turned and joined Evan. "That was rather rude, Evan."
"How do you know that pipsqueak?" Evan asked.
Mac stopped walking. "Pipsqueak?" she repeated. "Evan, Midshipman Buchanan is not a pipsqueak. He's a fine young man and is going to serve our country well."
"Mac, I didn't mean anything by it," Evan soothed. "Come on, let's go." They started walking, again. "You didn't answer my question. How do you know him?"
Mac grinned. "Actually, I was..." she started. But Evan interrupted her.
"And here we are at Bancroft Hall. This is the dormitory, Mac." Evan gave her a complete description of the hall, the dorm rooms, the dining hall.
She never did tell him how she knew Buchanan. 'I'll bet he doesn't even know I'm a lawyer at JAG,' she mused.

"Admiral Chegwidden! It's so good to have you with us, again! It's been too long," gushed the hostess of the B&B.
"Thanks, Marion. It's nice to be back. Marion Cummings, may I present Natalie James. Nat, this is our hostess, Marion Cummings," AJ said.
After the pleasantries were exchanged, Marion showed them to their adjoining rooms. "AJ, I need to go ahead and start getting ready for tonight," said Natalie.
"Of course, Nat. I'm going to take a walk around the grounds, but I'll be back by 1800. The dinner begins at 1900, and we're just a stone's throw away," AJ replied. He left the B&B and walked across the street to the campus.

Mac was getting very edgy. "Evan, we need to get back to the hotel and change."
"Mac, the dinner doesn't start until 1900; we have plenty of time," Evan informed her.
"Evan, it will take me a minimum of 68 minutes to get ready for a formal dinner. That's not counting the time it takes to get back to the hotel and then back here. We need to leave now," Mac insisted.
"68 minutes? Don't be ridiculous. It doesn't take anyone that long to get dressed. Not even my mother."
Mac was fuming now. "Okay, fine. You want to be late? We'll be late."
"No, Mac. We will not be late," Evan said firmly.
"Then we leave now. Otherwise we'll either be late or you can attend by yourself and I'll go home. Take your choice."
"Damn, woman. You have gotten mean in your old age, haven't you?" Evan grinned.
"Old age? You're calling me old? First you compare me to your mother. Now you're calling me old? I think I've heard enough, Evan. I'm going home," Mac said as she turned and walked away. 'AJ would never be so rude to his date. Date, hell! To any woman!'
Evan caught her by the arm before she got very far. "I was kidding, Mac. You should know that. It was just a joke."
"It wasn't funny, Evan."
"You would have thought so in Bosnia," he returned.
"This isn't Bosnia."
Admiral Chegwidden heard voices as he rounded the corner. 'That sounds like Mac.' He listened but didn't hear anything further. 'Nah, couldn't be. What would she be doing here?'

Mac emerged from the bathroom and donned her evening gown. "Evan, can you zip me up, please?"
"Sure; turn around," Evan ordered. Mac did, and Evan zipped up her dress.
She ran her hands down her hips and smoothed it out, then turned to face him. "Well? Am I dressed appropriately for your class reunion?" she quipped.
Evan whistled. "Absolutely! I'll be the envy of every male there tonight. Damn, Mac; you look gorgeous in that dress!"
Mac smiled. "Thanks." 'Why does that compliment bother me so much? I know... because he complimented the dress, not me. I'm gorgeous because I have this dress on. But I'm not otherwise.' Mac found still another reason why she wasn't going to continue this relationship after the weekend concluded.
"You ready to roll?" he asked.
"Yes, I just have to get my wrap," Mac said.
"Oh, here, I'll get it," Evan said as he picked up her Dennis Basso faux fur jacket. "Nice coat, Mac," he said, handing it to her.
Mac took it from him and slipped it on, shaking her head. 'I can't believe this guy. Was I really that blinded to it all in Bosnia? God, was I that horny that I settled for this?'

AJ and Natalie walked into Mahan Hall. AJ was stopped many times by his fellow classmates as they made their way to the Grand Ballroom. They reached the check room, and AJ gallantly removed Natalie's wrap first. He handed it to the Midshipman and then removed his own overcoat and handed him both that and his cover. He looked at the Midshipman and said, "Don't I know you?"
The Midshipman gulped and came to attention stance. "Sir, yes, Sir, Admiral."
"Midshipman Morris, isn't it?" AJ asked.
"Sir, yes, Sir."
"Good to see you, again, Morris. Carry on," AJ said.
"Thank you, Sir."
"You just made his night, AJ," said Captain Davis, standing behind AJ. AJ grinned and ushered Natalie into the ballroom.
"Shall we find our table first or would you prefer a dance before we sit down?" AJ asked his date.
"Let's find our table first, AJ. I don't really like to dance holding my purse. I suppose I can trust this group of people, don't you think?" Natalie said lightly.
"I should hope so, Nat," AJ smiled.
Mac and Evan walked into Mahan Hall a few minutes later. As they approached the Grand Ballroom, the line had grown by the check room. When they were next in line, Evan placed his coat and cover on the counter. Then he turned and helped Mac off with her coat, much to her surprise and delight. Then she realized that all the other men were doing the same thing; Evan was just following suit. However, the others were helping the women first. 'Not Evan.'
Mac noted that Evan didn't thank the young man who took their coats, so she turned to him. "Thank you, Midship... Midshipman Morris! Hello," she said happily.
"Colonel MacKenzie! Welcome to Annapolis, Ma'am," he replied.
"Thank you. I saw Midshipman Buchanan earlier today; did he tell you?"
"Yes, Ma'am. He did. I was hoping you'd be here tonight so I could say hello."
"It's good to see you, again. No dueling lately?" she grinned.
"No, Ma'am! Never again!" he assured her.
She laughed lightly. "Good. Glad to hear it. Bye now." She turned to enter the ballroom.
"Enjoy your evening, Colonel," he said.
The other Midshipman said to his friend, "Wow, Morris! An Admiral and a Colonel?"
As they entered the ballroom, Mac glanced around; there were Admirals and Generals, of course, and plenty of Captains and Colonels. But even more in number were the men in tuxedos. The women were all resplendent in their evening gowns. Mac looked down at herself and decided that she was, indeed, dressed appropriately.
"Let's dance, Mac," Evan said as he took her in his arms and whirled her on to the dance floor.
"Evan, I'd really rather find our table first," Mac said.
"We'll find our table later. I want to dance with you. We've never danced, you know," Evan said.
Mac was realizing that herself. Evan was not a good dancer. They hadn't been on the floor for two minutes and he'd already stepped on her toes twice. The music finally ended, and they found their table.
The evening wore on; dinner was served and there was more dancing. AJ and Natalie enjoyed each other's company, but it was obvious to both of them that they would not be sharing a bed later on. AJ was very glad that he'd requested two rooms at the B&B. 'What's wrong with me lately? Nat is a fine looking woman, and smart, witty...'
Mac spent a lot of her evening trying to keep Evan from drinking himself into a stupor. 'I can't believe I didn't know he was like this. Well, hell, MacKenzie, all you two did in Bosnia was have sex. You didn't go anywhere, visit anyone. You had a sexual relationship and that was all. Damn, you only had dinner with him twice in all that time! But I know he was more polite then; he had to have been!'
Mac and Evan were on the dance floor, again, and Evan stepped on Mac's toes... hard. "Ouch!" she cried and backed up... right into another couple. Mac turned to apologize, "Oh, I am so sorry... I..." Mac looked up into the startled eyes of her CO. "Admiral Chegwidden!"
"Mac! Are you all right?" he asked quickly. She looked at him questioningly. "Mac, you stumbled; are you hurt?"
"Oh, no, Sir. Evan stepped on my toes, again, that's all."
"Evan?"
"My date." Mac turned and took Evan by the arm, pulling him forward. "Admiral AJ Chegwidden, may I present General Evan Douglas." The two men eyed each other, but neither spoke. "Oh, but if you're both here, you must have been in the same class. So I guess you already know each other."
"Yes, Mac, we know each other," said Evan. "And I believe I know your date, too, AJ. Hello, Natalie."
"Hello, Doug," Natalie returned.
Mac flinched. 'Doug?' She looked at AJ. His eyes were hard and cold, and he was glaring at Evan. 'Oh my God. Evan is Doug... the man who... No! Oh God, please tell me it's not so!'
"How about switching partners for a while, AJ? Natalie?" Evan asked, and not waiting for AJ's reply, he extended his hand to Natalie.
"Why certainly. Thank you, Doug," Natalie accepted, and he whirled her away.
"Admiral, please tell me that what I'm thinking isn't true," Mac said.
"Can't do that, Mac," he replied.
"No. It can't be," Mac shook her head in despair. "I couldn't be sleeping with... oh God! No..."
AJ turned his attention to Mac. "You didn't know, Mac," he said gently. He lifted her face with his hand. "Mac. You didn't know." Mac turned to walk off the dance floor. "May I have this dance, Mac?"
She turned back to face AJ. "How could you even stand to look at me?" she whispered.
"Because you're my friend. My confidant," he replied softly as he took her in his arms and danced her across the floor. "And may I say, you look exceptionally beautiful this evening. You really make that dress come alive."
Mac smiled radiantly. 'Now that is a true compliment to me. Not the dress.' "Thank you, Sir."
"AJ."
"AJ," she smiled.
They continued dancing together for three more songs. Finally, AJ said, "I suppose I really should return you to your date... and claim mine."
"Unfortunately," Mac agreed.
They walked off the dance floor and made their way to Mac's table. The other couple wasn't there. AJ and Mac walked over to AJ's table; they weren't there either. They scanned the dance floor, and still they couldn't locate Douglas and Natalie.
"Do you suppose they left together?" Mac asked hopefully.
AJ smiled. "No such luck. They're here somewhere. They'll turn up. But in the meantime, shall we dance, again?"
"Perhaps we shouldn't, Sir," Mac said practically.
"Would you prefer to sit at your table or mine?" he asked graciously.
"Admiral, I meant that perhaps we shouldn't be together."
"I know that's what you meant, Mac. But Doug left you with me. And until he makes himself visible for me to return you to him, I'll be right by your side," AJ informed her.
"Why would I be angry if Evan said that to me? And yet your saying it is so gallant?" Mac asked quietly.
AJ chuckled. "Gallant, Mac? I haven't been called gallant in a long time."
"Yes you have. You just haven't known it, evidently," Mac said. "I can think of a lot of other things women have called you in my hearing... things that would probably make you blush."
"SeALs don't blush."
"Vigorous."
"Sydney."
"Very good!" Mac replied. "I'm impressed. Oh... no wait. You heard us at the airport. Okay, try this one. "Virile."
"Laura."
"Great hands."
AJ raised an eyebrow. "Carolyn.
""Sexy..."
"Chloe!" They laughed.
"You didn't let me finish. Sexy ears."
"Ears?" AJ shook his head. "Only ear woman I know is Bobbi."
Mac nodded. "Bedroom eyes."
AJ was stumped. "Bedroom eyes? I don't know that I've heard that one before. I give up. Who?"
"Harriett!" Mac grinned.
"Harriett?" AJ said incredulously, as the blood rushed up his neck and into his face.
"I thought SeALs didn't blush, AJ," Mac quipped.
AJ took Mac into his arms and danced her around the floor, again. "Our sweet little Harriett said that about me? Damn," he mused. They danced for another hour before AJ caught sight of Natalie. "There's Nat. But I don't see Doug," he said, steering Mac toward the tables.
"Natalie?" AJ said as they approached her. "Where's Doug?""Smoking. I didn't care to smell like a cigar, so I came back in here." Natalie turned to Mac. "I'm sorry I kept him so long."
"Don't be. I'm not," Mac replied with a smile. "I never actually met you earlier. I'm Colonel Sarah MacKenzie."
"Pleasure," Natalie said, threading her arm through AJ's elbow possessively. "And how do you know AJ? Old flame?" she grinned up at him.
Mac chuckled, "Not quite. I work for Admiral Chegwidden. I'm one of his lawyers at JAG."
"Oh, I see. Then you two have never dated," she said looking from one to the other.
They both shook their heads. "No, Nat," AJ said.
"Sir, if you'll excuse me, I need to visit the powder room," said Mac.
"Excuse us both, AJ. I'll join you," she said to Mac. The women walked away together. "So, Sarah, how do you happen to know Doug?" Natalie asked.
"Call me 'Mac'," she requested. "I met him when I was serving in Bosnia. I hadn't seen him since, until yesterday."
"I used to be madly in love with Doug. He never even looked twice at me until tonight," Natalie said.
"Tonight?"
"Yes. Because I'm with AJ. Doug has always felt inferior to AJ, especially where women are concerned. Probably because women generally prefer AJ to Doug. I'm one of the rare ones who preferred Doug. But because I never dated AJ, Doug never paid me any attention. You know it was Doug who caused the split between AJ and Marcella?" Mac nodded. "AJ never told a soul. Doug's the one who bragged about it. Amazing. He thought it would alienate people from AJ, but it did the opposite."
"Admiral Chegwidden is a very special man," Mac said.
Natalie smiled. "That he is. Very special. And I really wish we felt something for each other, but we don't. We're friends, but that's all we've ever been. I think we were both hoping for more this weekend. But we both realized early in the evening that I'm going to sleep in my room tonight, not his."
"You have two rooms?" Mac asked, amazed.
"Oh yes. AJ would never presume that a woman he took somewhere would sleep with him. He always books two rooms. Then she has a choice. Of course, the majority of the time, only one room gets used!" Natalie laughed, and Mac joined her.
The women left the powder room and returned to the ballroom. They found AJ waiting for them just inside the doorway. "Any sign of Evan?" asked Mac.
AJ shook his head. "Why don't you join Nat and me at our table. When he comes back inside, you can go back with him."
"Do I have to?" Mac whispered.
AJ smiled tenderly at Mac. "He did bring you tonight, Mac." They sat around the table and chatted amiably with the other guests.
After another 10 minutes, Douglas appeared in the doorway and looked around the room. When he spotted AJ with both Natalie and Mac, he walked over and blurted out, "So, AJ! One woman still isn't enough for you, huh? You bring Natalie and then two-time her with my date! Well, you can keep your paws off Mac, Buddy. She's mine!" He grabbed Mac's arm and pulled her out of the chair and started walking away, almost dragging Mac with him.
AJ was going to let it pass; Doug was obviously drunk. But when he heard Mac wince in pain, he stood up and barked, "General Douglas!"
The pair stopped and turned to face AJ. "Yes, Admiral Chegwidden?" he spat.
"Let go of Colonel MacKenzie. Now!" he ordered. Douglas released her arm, and Mac brought her other arm up to rub the pain away. "Colonel, are you hurt?" AJ asked, maintaining his command voice.
"No, Sir; I'm fine. Thank you, Admiral," Mac replied.
"Be very glad of that, Douglas. Now I suggest you go to your table and pour some black coffee down that throat of yours. And when you're fit to be around, Mac will join you at your table."
"She's my date!"
"Yes, she is! Your date! Not your property! She's a woman, and she deserves to be treated with respect, decency, and tenderness."
"And wouldn't you just love to treat her that way..." Douglas accused.
"Admiral, if I may?" Mac interrupted.
AJ nodded to her. "Speak freely, Colonel."
Mac turned to Douglas. "Evan, I don't understand what's happened to you. You did not behave this way when I met you in Bosnia. You treated me with decency. No, you were never tender and you never showed me respect. But you were at least decent. And now even that is gone from your character. On the other hand, you accused Admiral Chegwidden of wanting to treat me with respect, decency, and tenderness. Well, here's a news bulletin for you, Evan. He already does! Admiral Chegwidden respects everyone unless they have proven to him that his respect is unmerited. And he treats everyone with decency. Everyone! Even those who don't deserve it. And as for tenderness? I've never known a more tender man. He's hell on wheels most of the time, but tenderness is just below the surface. He is, by far, the finest CO I've ever known... the finest man I've ever known! You'd do well to emulate him, not try to hurt him."
Douglas spat, "Sounds to me like you're in love with him, Mac."
"There's not one person under his command who doesn't love him, Evan. Male. Female. Every one of us. And every one of us would follow him to hell and back!" Mac insisted. "We're all dreading the day when he decides to leave JAG... for whatever reason. He's too good, too fine an officer to stay where he is much longer. We know that, and we're all trying to prepare ourselves for that day. But none of us want it to come soon... and yet we all want it tomorrow. Because he does deserve it. He deserves the best life has to offer."
"Colonel? I think that's enough," AJ said quietly. "When I said you could speak freely, Mac, I had no idea you'd speak that freely," he smiled. Then he turned back to Douglas. "Go sober up, Doug." Mac turned to accompany him back to their table. "Mac?" AJ called as he saw her walking to Douglas.
She turned around and smiled. "I'm fine, Sir. Evan needs me right now."
AJ smiled and nodded. He turned back to his table and sat down as Mac and Douglas walked away. "My apologies," AJ said to the others at the table.
"No need to apologize, AJ." "That's quite all right, AJ." "He was asking for it."
AJ turned to Natalie. "Would you like to dance, again, Nat?" She nodded. "Wonderful. I enjoy watching you whirl around; I get to admire your beauty much better on the dance floor."
Natalie blushed. "Oh, AJ. You do say the sweetest things."
Mac and Douglas reached their table and sat down. The waiter had already delivered a pot of black coffee to their table, and Mac poured a cup for Douglas. He reached to put cream and sugar in it, but Mac stopped him. "No, Evan. It needs to be black coffee." He looked at Mac with daggers in his eyes. She smiled back at him, "Please, Evan? Drink it this way." He picked up the cup and drank.
"I hate coffee," he said. Mac laughed lightly. "What's so funny?"
"You drank coffee in Bosnia all the time, Evan."
"Yea, but that was weak coffee. And I loaded it up with sugar and milk to kill the taste."
"Then why did you drink it?" she asked him.
"To stay awake!"
Several cups of coffee later, Douglas was feeling more like himself. He excused himself to the men's room a couple of times, and the third time he didn't return directly to the table. He walked over to AJ and Natalie. "Natalie, may I have this dance? AJ, with your permission?"
AJ glanced at Natalie. Her face had brightened considerably at Douglas' request. AJ nodded to him, and Douglas extended his hand to Natalie. She accepted it and they walked out to the dance floor. An hour later, they were still dancing. Slowly. And very close. AJ watched with a gleam in his eye. When one of the women at the table commented that it looked like they were enjoying themselves, AJ replied, "That they are, Donna. That they are." He turned back and grinned, "And it's about time."
"You don't mind, AJ?" Donna asked.
"Not at all. Natalie was always fond of Doug. He just never saw her."
"That's because you weren't interested in her," Donna said wisely.
"Then I'm doubly glad I brought Natalie this evening," AJ smirked. "Now help me figure out a way to have the two of them leave together."
"That shouldn't be difficult. Just switch dates."
"You forget, my dear," said Donna's husband, "Doug's date is AJ's subordinate. He can't very well end up with her on his arm on the way out tonight."
"Oh my. I had forgotten that."
AJ smiled. "I think I'll go see if Mac has any ideas. She's usually pretty good at sneaky maneuvers. She is a Marine, after all," he joked, and the others at the table laughed heartily.
AJ made his way over to Mac's table, stopping all along the way to talk to old friends. When he finally reached Mac, he pulled out Doug's chair and sat. "So, Mac. Looks like Doug and Nat are hitting it off rather well."
Mac smiled. "Yes they are."
"You okay with that?" he asked gently.
"Of course I am, Admiral," she smiled. "Natalie really likes him. She told me so in the powder room earlier. Now to figure out a way to have them leave together."
"My thoughts exactly," AJ grinned. "Any ideas?"
She shook her head and looked around the table. "Anyone have an idea?" she asked.
"Either of you have a cell phone with you?" asked Captain Curtis.
Mac nodded. "Yes, in my purse."
"You just got a call from your office, and you're both needed back there tonight. Guaranteed, Doug will ask Nat to stay with him," Curtis suggested.
"Think it'll work, Mac?" AJ asked.
"Depends on Natalie. Will she stay if he asks her to?"
AJ thought for a moment. "I think so, but I'm not really sure. Maybe we should alter the idea slightly. We don't have to return to the office, but we have to be on a conference call for a couple of hours. Or better still, if we could get a couple of Midshipmen to get into trouble, we could..."
The proverbial light bulb went on in both of their heads at once. "Morris and Buchanan!" Mac said excitedly. AJ nodded.
"Think they'd do it?" he asked.
"Absolutely. And Morris was at the coat room tonight. I'll go see if he's still there and have a chat with him. If Evan comes back, tell him I got a phone call and stepped outside for a minute."
The other guests at the table nodded. Mac pulled her phone out of her purse and pretended to answer it as she left the ballroom. AJ returned to his table; he passed very close to the dancing couple, so he shook his head and muttered something about people leaving those damned phones at home.
Mac approached the coat room and to her delight, Morris was still there. "Midshipman Morris," she said. "I need a favor."
"Absolutely, Ma'am!" he said immediately.
"I need you and Midshipman Buchanan to stage a... disturbance."
"A disturbance, Ma'am?" he gulped.
"Yes. Like a fight or something... as soon as possible," Mac added.
"Like now?" he asked. She smiled as she nodded. "But Ma'am, I'm not off coat room duty until the dance is over."
"How many of you are in there?" she asked.
"Three, Ma'am," he replied.
"I think you can make do with only two for the rest of the evening, don't you, Midshipmen?" Mac asked the other two young men.
"Ma'am, yes, Ma'am," they chorused.
"Good; thank you. So, Mr. Morris. Come up with something to argue about and go get Buchanan and start your fight just outside the ballroom. Make it loud enough that you can be heard inside the ballroom over the music."
"Ma'am, what if the Commandant..."
"These Midshipmen will inform your Security detail that they are to come and get Admiral Chegwidden and me. We'll come out and take over. Believe me, Morris, you won't get in trouble for this. And you'll be doing the Admiral and me a favor. It's always a good thing to have a favor to call in... especially from an Admiral," she smirked.
"Okay, Ma'am. I'll go get Buchanan. We'll be back here in, say... 15 or 20 minutes."
"Perfect. Oh! By the way, Admiral Chegwidden was a SeAL, you know. When we drag you two off, you might get him to tell you about some of his exploits." Mac winked at him and walked back inside the ballroom.
"Oh, God," groaned Morris. "I sure hope we don't get into trouble for this."
Almost 20 minutes later, Mac could hear yelling coming from outside. She saw several officers going to the windows and peering out to see what the commotion was. The yelling got louder and louder until everyone inside knew there was something happening out on the lawn. Finally, two Security guards entered the ballroom with one of the Midshipmen from the coat room. He pointed to Mac and the Admiral. The guards approached the Admiral first, so Mac walked over to them.
"Pardon me. You're Admiral Chegwidden? And Colonel MacKenzie?"
"That's right. What's going on? Is there a problem outside?" asked AJ.
The guards nodded. "Yes, Sir. Two Midshipmen were fighting, Sir. Pretty rough fighting, too, Admiral. They're both beat up pretty bad."
"What does that have to do with me?" queried the Admiral.
The guards looked a little surprised at the Admiral's question, so Mac quickly spoke up. "Do these Midshipmen have names?" she said forcefully.
"Ma'am, yes, Ma'am! Midshipmen Morris and Buchanan, Colonel."
"Morris and Buchanan!? They're the two who were dueling in Rock Creek Park last year, Admiral," Mac said.
"Damn. Why would they..." AJ started. "Come on, Colonel. I want to have a talk with these two Midshipmen." AJ turned to Natalie and Douglas, who had walked up beside them during the discussion with the guards. "I'm sorry, Nat. I have to take care of this. Doug, would you be good enough to take care of Nat while I'm outside?"
"Not a problem," he replied.
"Go ahead, AJ. It's fine. I understand," Natalie said sweetly.
AJ nodded, and he and Mac left with the guards. When they got outside, they were both shocked at the Midshipmen's appearance. "My God! You two really..." Mac started. "Okay, let's go. March! Admiral Chegwidden wants a word with you both! I can't believe this. You've really done it this time..." she admonished them as they walked inside and into another room.
AJ slammed the door behind them. As he turned around, his face lit into a huge grin. "Midshipmen, you did a fine job. Thank you very much!" he said, extending his hand to each of them.
"You didn't really hurt each other, did you?" Mac asked. "That's just paint, right?"
Morris and Buchanan looked at each other and then back to Mac and the Admiral. They nodded. "Yes, Ma'am. Neither of us really wanted to belt the other," admitted Morris.
"I'm glad!" she laughed.
After a good 30 minutes, AJ returned to the ballroom to find Natalie and Douglas chatting with old friends. AJ walked up and said, "Nat, this thing with the Midshipmen is going to take a while to resolve. Probably several hours. I guess I need to go ahead now and see you back to the B&B. I'm sorry, Nat."
Natalie and Douglas looked at each other and then back at AJ. "No need for that, AJ," Douglas said. "I'll be glad to see Nat safely in for the night. If you'll do me the favor of making sure Mac gets back safely."
"That's not a problem, Doug. I expected to do that. I didn't figure you'd want to wait around for her. It'll probably be almost daylight by the time we finish with those two boys," AJ said disgustedly. "Damn, I can't believe they'd pull something like this. Not after that duel last year." AJ really hoped Douglas was buying this. He could tell that Natalie was, but Douglas... He could never be sure. AJ leaned over and kissed Natalie on the cheek. "Good night, Nat. And thanks for your understanding."
"Good night, AJ. Good luck!" she replied.
AJ started to leave, but Douglas put his hand on AJ's shoulder before he'd gone two steps. "AJ, Nat says that you got two rooms at the B&B."
AJ turned back to face him. "That's right. What of it?"
Doug was nervous; AJ could tell. "I'd like to take Nat back to the hotel with me. She wants to come." AJ looked down at Natalie. She smiled and nodded slightly, biting her upper lip. "Since you have the two rooms at the B&B, and you and Mac are going to be working so late, I thought maybe you wouldn't mind..."
"Mind what, Doug?" AJ pressed.
"Mind letting Mac stay in Nat's room. I'd bring Mac's things over and leave them for her. And we'd take Nat's to the hotel. I'd see Nat back to DC... that is, if you wouldn't mind taking Mac back with you."
"This is very irregular, Doug. Mac works for me. I can't..."
Douglas interrupted him. "Everyone here knows, AJ. If anyone said something about it, you'd have plenty of witnesses to the contrary. But as Mac said earlier, you're well loved. I don't think anyone would ever accuse you of... of anything. No one but me, that is." AJ frowned. "AJ, I am sorry. Really, I am. I didn't expect Marcella to actually leave you. I just wanted to make waves. Make her mad at you. Have a fight. I never thought she'd leave. I won't say I didn't hope she would. I did, and you know it. But I didn't believe she would. I've regretted what I did for 25 years, AJ. I lost my best friend. I lost a lot of friends because of what I did. And it was all my doing. I know you can't forgive me. But try not to hate me so much. Please?"
AJ was still frowning, but he nodded. "Apology accepted."
Doug smiled, really smiled, for the first time in years. "Thanks, AJ. That means a lot to me. Now about Mac?"
AJ nodded. "All right. I'll see her home tomorrow. You just be sure her things are in the room at the B&B."
Doug started, "Tell her..."
"I'll tell her, Doug," AJ nodded, again. "Good night." He left the ballroom with his hard facial expression firmly in place. As soon as he entered the room with Mac and the Midshipmen, he broke into a smile. "It worked!"

AJ pulled into the parking lot and turned off the ignition. "Mac? Wake up. We're here." She didn't budge. "Mac," he said, again, tapping her leg.
"Hmm? Oh! Are we back?" Mac looked around.
"Yes. We're at the B&B."
"Mmm, that was a beautiful drive, AJ."
"You slept through most of it, Mac," AJ chuckled.
"No I didn't. Just the last... Oh! The last 74 minutes. Oops. Sorry about that."
"No big deal, Mac. I think Morris and Buchanan were quite relieved to get back to Bancroft."
"They loved the adventure. Don't let 'em fool ya," Mac quipped. "What'd you talk about while I was asleep?"
"SeAL training, mostly. They're rethinking their decisions to apply for the Teams. They didn't know all that they'd have to do."
"You scared them, didn't you!?"
"Just told 'em the truth, Mac. And I said they're rethinking... not that they've decided against it."
AJ got out of the Escalade and walked around to the passenger side. He opened Mac's door and helped her out. "Thank you, Sir."
"AJ."
Mac smiled. "Thank you, AJ."
"Shall we go up?" he asked. "Or would you like to take a walk around the garden first? It's beautiful at night, even in the winter."
Mac smiled. "The garden sounds wonderful."
AJ took Mac's arm and threaded it through the crook of his elbow. He led her around to the back of the B&B and opened the gate. Mac walked inside and AJ followed, closing the gate behind them. He put his arm gently around Mac's waist, and they walked slowly down the garden path.
Neither of them spoke; their pace continually slowed until they stopped under the arbor. AJ turned Mac gently and folded her into his arms. He lowered his mouth to her face and kissed her forehead. Then her nose. He moved to her cheeks and ears. Mac moaned her pleasure, and AJ moved to capture her lips in his. Mac parted her lips, and AJ slowly slid his tongue inside her mouth.
"Oh Mac..." he whispered. "I want you so much."
"And I want you, AJ. I have for so long."
"We can't. You know that," he groaned.
"I know. But I can dream."
"You're not dreaming right now, Mac. This is real."
"I'm so glad," she whispered as he pulled her closer to him.
"We should go up now," AJ mumbled in her mouth.
Mac pulled away and nodded slightly. AJ slipped his arm around her waist, again, and they walked back to the front of the building and up the stairs. AJ opened the door to her room and stepped aside. She looked at him longingly. "Good night, Mac," he whispered.
"Good night, AJ." She stepped inside and closed the door. A minute later she heard a soft knock. But it came from the other side of the room. She looked and saw another door. She walked over to it and unlocked it, stepping back. She watched as the door opened and AJ walked through. "Oh, AJ!" she whispered and ran into his waiting arms.
