Harriett and Julia were just finishing their lunch.  They had talked about so many things... Julia reveled in hearing how AJ helped Harriett plan her wedding, even to telling Bud that he should let Harriett wear her wedding dress, not her uniform.  And then to find out that AJ delivered little AJ right on the floor of his own office!  And so much else... no wonder Harriett loved him so.

"So tell me about you, Julia.  All I know is what Bud told me before I met you last night... and then what I heard from you at Harm's and this morning."

"There's not really much to tell, Harriett.  I live a pretty boring life," Julia laughed.  "Well, my vacations aren't boring.  I try to take a cruise once a year."

"Oooo!  A cruise!  That's what made me decide to go into the Navy!"

"Really?" asked Julia.

"Yes, Mother and Dad took me on a cruise while I was in high school.  I loved it!"

"I went on my first cruise when I was 32.  It was wonderful!  Now that I can afford it a little easier, I try to go every year.  I've been on seven cruises.  My favorites are Hawaii and Bermuda."

"You should have joined the Navy!" Harriett laughed.

"Only problem is my age.  When I would have joined, women still weren't on the ships.  And that's what I wanted."

"Aah, I forgot about that.  You're right.  Oh well.  At least you can cruise when you like."

"True.  And I do, every chance I get."

"The Admiral has a boat, you know.  Maybe he'll take you out on it sometime," Harriett offered.

"That would be nice.  I love boats... any size, any kind.  If it's on the water, I'm on it!" Julia said.  "But I really doubt that I see him, again, Harriett," Julia said sadly.  She resigned herself to the facts.  He wouldn't call; he said he would, but things would come up and there just wouldn't be time.  She wasn't the kind of woman a man wanted.  That was painfully obvious after more than 20 years of being a widow.  She'd accepted it years ago; such was her life; it was no big deal.

"Why?  What do you mean?"  Harriett was truly surprised.  'After the frosting episode at Harm's last night, the Admiral's insisting he take her home, his spending the night... and she doesn't think she'll see him, again?  Why would she turn him down?'

"Men are just not interested in me that way, Harriett.  I'm sure he won't call; they never do," she answered.  'But, oh!  I wish this time it could be different!  I wonder if I stayed this weekend... but, no, I can't.  He did sound like he really wanted me to stay.'

"Julia, if the Admiral said he would call you, he will call you.  He doesn't make promises lightly."

"Well, to tell you the truth, I really hope I'm wrong!  He is so incredibly..." Julia gushed, laughing.

"Tigger!" little AJ yelled and interrupted Julia's description.  "Wanna see Tigger!"

"Yes, Honey.  Tigger is next," Harriett laughed at her son.  Julia took the trash from their table and tossed it in the can while Harriett put AJ's paraphernalia back in the diaper bag.

"Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!  Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!" Harriett and Julia sang as they swung a squealing little AJ between them and walked to the next pavilion.

"Julia, I am so glad you came with us today.  You are so much fun!  It's nice to be around someone who is always smiling and laughing.  You're such a treat!  I'm having a blast!"

"I am, too, Harriett.  I'm glad you agreed to let me come... especially considering there's a Marine guard detail following me everywhere," Julia replied with a grin.

Harriett looked up at her surprised.  "How did you know that?"

Julia smiled.  "Oh, let's see.  There was the car that followed us to the Guest House last night... and AJ nodded to the Marine in the driver's seat as we went inside.  I didn't connect that until this morning, though. There was a Marine standing outside my door when AJ left this morning.  Umm, I mean..." she stuttered and Harriett laughed.

"That's okay, Julia.  I know he was there all night.  So does everyone else at JAG, thanks to my husband.  He kind of blurted it out while you were in the ladies room.  Sorry about that."

"Oh my," Julia cringed.  "Well, I'm sure the Admiral told them he was just there for my protection... even if he didn't tell me that," she rationalized.  "Harriett, we didn't..."  She decided not to bother explaining.  Who would believe her anyway?

Harriett smiled as she remembered the Admiral's comment.  "I don't do guard duty," he had said.

Julia continued recounting her guards.  "Of course, then there was also the Marine who drove me from the Guest House to JAG this morning, and then the one who stood outside the bullpen... and moved when I went in the ladies room.  But what cinched it for me is the Marine who's following us here.  When I saw him, I knew AJ put a tail on me."

Harriett laughed.  "You only see one?  There are four of them that I've counted so far.  Which means there are probably at least another four I haven't seen yet."

"But why, Harriett?  Does he think Seaman Johansen is going to come after me?" Julia questioned.  "Why would he do that?  I wish I understood what was going on..."

"It's for your protection, Julia.  The Admiral would tell you if you needed to know.  He's just making sure you're kept safe."

"What about when I leave here?  I'll go home and there won't be anyone to watch me.  So why bother, here?  Johansen knows where I live, surely."  Suddenly Julia stopped in her tracks.  "Oh no!"

"What?  What is it?"  Harriett was immediately concerned when she saw Julia's eyes fill with tears and threaten to spill over.  "Julia?"

"That's why AJ asked me to stay for the weekend."  Julia's nervous smile was on her face now and she was laughing at herself.  "Oh, what a dope I am!  I really wanted to believe that he wanted me to stay... for me!  Oh well.  At least I wasn't stupid enough to say yes."

'The Admiral invited her to stay for the weekend?  Oooh, this is getting good!!' Harriett thought.  "Julia, you're wrong.  While you were in the ladies room, Bud blurted out that the Admiral had stayed the night with you at the Guest House.  He even suggested that the Admiral was there to protect you.  The Admiral's response was a very adamant, 'Lieutenant, I don't do guard duty'.  If the Admiral invited you to stay for the weekend, it's because he wants you.  Not because he feels a duty to protect you."  Harriett took Julia's hands in hers and repeated, "He wants you."

"Tiner, have they checked Mrs. Kensington's car yet?" the Admiral bellowed from his office.

"Sir, they're just checking it now," Gunny answered.

AJ looked up to see Gunnery Sergeant Victor Galindez standing in his doorway.  "Gunny?"

"Admiral, the detail just checked in, Sir.  They ID'd two possible threats to Mrs. Kensington at the Zoo.  Those threats were neutralized; they're being taken to the brig now, Sir."

"Damn.  I was hoping I was wrong about this," AJ said.

"Apparently not, Sir."

AJ sat back down behind his desk.  "Tiner!  Get Rabb, MacKenzie, and Roberts in here now!"

A few moments later, Harm, Mac, and Bud entered the Admiral's office and snapped to attention.  "Reporting as ordered, Sir," Harm said.

"As you were.  I need Mrs. Kensington's cell phone number.  Any of you have it?"

"No, Sir."  "No, Sir.  I only have her home and office numbers."  "No, Sir."

"Damn.  I need to reach her.  Dismissed."

"Excuse me, Admiral?" Bud hesitantly addressed his CO.

"What?" AJ snapped.

"If you need to reach her right now, Sir, she's with Harriett and little AJ.  You could call her on our cell phone.  I'm sure Harriett has it with her; she always does, Sir."

"Dial!" AJ ordered as he pushed his phone to the edge of the desk in front of Bud.

Bud dialed the phone and handed the receiver to the Admiral.

"Dismissed!"  AJ took the receiver and listened.

"Hello?" Harriett's sweet voice came over the line.

"Lieutenant Sims, let me speak to Mrs. Kensington for a moment," AJ ordered.

"Of course, Admiral, she's right here," Harriett answered.

Julia took the phone from Harriett and said, "AJ?  Hello!  What a pleasant surprise."

"Enjoying the Zoo?" AJ asked.

"Very much."

"I should have taken the day off and gone with you."

"Changed your mind, eh?  Why's that?"

"Because I miss you." AJ replied.

Julia's head was swimming.  She so wanted to believe that AJ was interested in her as a woman, not just as a witness who needed protecting.

"Julia?" AJ said when she didn't say anything.  "You still there?"

"Yes, AJ, I'm here."

"How much longer are you going to be at the Zoo?" he asked.

"I don't know; probably another hour.  Why?  Is there a problem?"

"No, no problem.  I just wondered."

"AJ, you don't have to worry about me.  The Marines are watching me just fine; trust them."

"How did you find out?" AJ said softly.

"I saw them.  I put two and two together."

"And you're okay with it?"

"Of course.  If you think it's necessary, who am I to argue with you?  You're the JAG!" she laughed.

"I love hearing you laugh.  It's infectious," AJ said.  'I think I love you; how is that possible?  I've never fallen so fast for a woman... and a woman I've never even had in bed?  Unheard of.  Chegwidden, you've got it bad...'

"AJ, I'll probably just get in my car and leave when we get back.  I won't take the time to go upstairs.  But can you call me later on my cell..."

"Julia, I want you to come upstairs before you leave.  It's important that I see you; I need to explain something before you go."

Julia's heart fell.  She knew what he would tell her.  That there would never be anything between them.  She really didn't want to hear, and certainly not in his office.

"We'll see, AJ.  Depends on what time we get back.  Gotta go!  Bye!" and she hung up.

"Tiner!  Haven't Lieutenant Sims and Mrs. Kensington returned yet?" AJ barked into the intercom.

"Sir, yes, Sir.  Lieutenant Sims just walked in the bullpen, Sir."

AJ was out the door and in the bullpen before Tiner even finished his sentence.  "Lieutenant Sims!  Where is Mrs. Kensington?" he bellowed.

"Already gone, Sir.  We said goodbye in the parking lot, and she headed out.  She said she needed to get on the road; it's a long drive, Sir.  She wanted me to ask you to call her on her cell phone." Harriett explained.  She could see he was agitated, and getting more so as she spoke.

"Damn!!  Gunny!  I assume they did finish her car?" AJ interrupted before she'd even finished.

"Sir!  Yes, Sir, Admiral.  There was one incendiary device attached to the fuel line; the bomb squad detached and diffused it, Sir."

"Oh my God!  Julia!" Harriett gasped.

"I told you she was in danger, Harriett," AJ said.  "The Marines also apprehended two thugs at the Zoo before they got to her.  It's not safe for her to be driving home alone.  How long ago did she leave?"

"Only a couple of minutes ago, Sir.  And she was going to stop at the Amoco station on the corner to fill up the car.  She's probably still there."

"Gunny!"

"I'm on it, Sir!"

"Tiner!  I want to know how Mrs. Kensington was allowed to leave the parking lot when I gave a direct order that she was to be detained!!"

"Uh, Sir?  Looks like they didn't allow her to leave.  Here she comes, Sir."  Tiner pointed to the elevator that had just opened.

A very upset Julia Kensington was headed his way escorted by Marine Corporal Timmons.

"Thank you, Corporal.  I'll take it from here," the Admiral said evenly.  "Mrs. Kensington, if you'll join me in my office?"

"No, AJ, I don't have time," Julia protested.  "I told you I needed to be on the road by now.  I don't have time for this.  Why couldn't you just call me like I asked?"

The bullpen was suddenly quiet.  No one refused the Admiral in his own bullpen.  Certainly no one argued with him in front of his staff.

"Julia, please.  Let's go to my office.  There's something I need to explain to you," he said calmly.

"AJ, I know what you're going to say, and it's fine.  Believe me... I've heard it all before and it's..."

"Mrs. Kensington.  You have no idea what I'm going to tell you.  Now come with me to my office," AJ ordered.

She stood her ground.  "No."

"Fine," he replied coolly.  He didn't want to tell her this here with so many people around, but he had to tell her.  And if she wouldn't go to his office, well...  "Then I'll tell you here.  As you know, there's been a Marine guard detail following you since yesterday.  Today at the Zoo, they apprehended two hired thugs before they were able to attack you.  This afternoon, here in the parking lot, the bomb squad removed and diffused an incendiary device from the fuel line of your vehicle."

Julia gasped.  "Wha--aat?"  Her legs were suddenly like Jell-O, and she felt herself start to collapse.  "AJ!" she cried.

AJ saw her resolve crumbling before his eyes as he spoke.  He also saw her legs start to wobble and knew she was going down.  He reached out and grabbed her just as her knees gave way and she yelled for him to help her.  He scooped her up in his arms, and she flung her arms around his neck and buried her face in his chest.  AJ kissed the top of her head and murmured to her as he headed back to his office.  "It's okay, Darlin'.  I've got you."

The staff in the bullpen was startled at the complete 180 they just saw in the Admiral.  One minute, he was tearing into anyone in his way, and the next, he was as tender and compassionate as anyone could be.  There was no doubt in anyone's mind now.  The Admiral was in love.

AJ laid Julia on the sofa in his office.  "Tiner!" he bellowed.  "Get me a blanket!"

Harriett came rushing in carrying one of little AJ's afghans.  "It's not full size, Sir, but it should be big enough."

AJ took it from her and laid it on Julia's shaking form.  He was still whispering to her and running his hands through her hair; she was beginning to calm down.  "AJ?" she looked up at him.

"Yes, Darlin'?"

"Why would he want to hurt me?  I don't know anything..." she started to cry.

"Don't think about that right now, Sweetheart.  Just relax, try to go to sleep.  You need to rest for a while.  Then when you wake up, I'll tell you all I can about it.  Sleep now, Jules," AJ cooed to her as he gently caressed her face and held her hand.

When Julia fell asleep a few minutes later, AJ and Harriett left the office, and AJ pulled the door closed behind them.

"Admiral, permission to speak freely, Sir?" she asked quietly.

"Of course, Harriett.  What's on your mind?"

"Sir, do you want a relationship with Julia or just a one-night stand?"

"Harriett, I said you could speak freely, but don't you think that's overstepping it just a bit?" he replied with just a hint of a smile playing on his lips.

"Admiral, Julia shared a lot with me today, about her life, I mean.  She's been alone for a long time.  I can't imagine why, but for whatever reason, men haven't been interested in her.  She's hardly even dated in 20 years.  She's very open and honest, and she has a lot of love to give.  I just don't want to see her get hurt," Harriett explained.

"And you think I'll hurt her, Harriett?" AJ asked quietly.

"No, Sir.  Not intentionally.  But..."  Harriett was about to respond when she looked up to see Julia opening the office door and stepping out.  "Julia?  Are you feeling better?"  Harriett asked.

AJ turned and took hold of Julia's elbow, turning her to him.  "Jules?  Are you okay?"

"AJ, do I remember that you said there was a bomb..."

"Yes, you remember correctly.  But it's gone now, and I've had your car thoroughly checked over by the Marines and by the bomb squad.  It's clean," AJ reassured her.

Harriett inconspicuously walked back into the bullpen to give them a little privacy.  It wasn't much; they were in the Admiral's outer office, but it was something.

"It isn't safe for me to go home today, though, is it?" she asked, tears beginning to pool in her eyes, again.

"Not really, no."

"And that's why you stayed with me last night and why you asked me to stay for the weekend, isn't it," she stated as she turned to follow Harriett into the bullpen.

"No, it isn't, Julia," he answered.  Julia stopped and looked back at him with questioning eyes.  He approached her and put his hands on her shoulders.  "Jules, if I was only concerned for your safety, I would have suggested you let us put you in a safe house for the weekend.  Or send a detail home with you.  Hell, I probably would have assigned your safety to Rabb or Roberts.  I would not have suggested you stay with me.  And as I told Roberts earlier today, Admirals do not do guard duty.  I stayed with you last night because I wanted you."

"Then why..." she started to ask, but couldn't.  How could she ask him why he hadn't touched her?  Why he hadn't... wanted her?  That would make her sound like a slut.  And she wasn't that... far from it.  She hadn't even known a man in years that she would have let touch her.  But AJ Chegwidden?  When she first saw him in the courtroom yesterday, she knew.  'This is a man I would let do anything to me.'  She dropped her head, and a single tear rolled down her cheek.

AJ walked over to her, and lifted her chin with his finger.  "It was too soon, Jules," he said, answering her unfinished question.  "I couldn't take you to bed last night.  God knows I wanted to...  But I want you to know me... trust me... completely.  Before I make love to you."  And with that, he pulled her to him and kissed her soundly.  He knew they were standing in the doorway to the bullpen.  He knew his entire staff was watching.  But he didn't care, not this time.  'Admiral's privilege,' he thought to himself.

When he looked up, he was surprised to see that his staff was not watching them.  They were going about business as usual... almost.  As he looked around, he saw that each one was smiling... every last one of them, even the Marine guard.  When AJ's eyes met Harriett's, he smiled and mouthed, "Thank you."  Her eyes glowed, her face alight with a smile, as she nodded her head in return.

"It's not fancy, but they have great seafood," AJ offered as he held the door open for Julia to enter.

"It's perfect, AJ.  I'm not exactly dressed for a fancy dinner, you know," she responded.  "When do they eat?" she asked, as she nodded her head in the direction of 'her' Marines.

"Don't worry about them.  They'll eat when it's their turn," AJ laughed.

"Will one of them be inside the restaurant, AJ?" she asked casually.

"Are you nervous, Jules?" he said softly.

"Maybe.  Just a little," she admitted.  "I've never had a bomb on my car before.  It feels like something out of 'The Pelican Brief'.  Hey!  I even have the right name... Julia!" she laughed.

"Actually, Julia Roberts was the actress.  The character was Darby Shaw.  So there's no connection," AJ reasoned.

"So, are you a John Grisham fan?  Or a Julia Roberts fan?"

"Neither, actually.  The movie came out in '93 when I was stationed at Pearl.  My sister, Adele, came out for a visit... only visit she's ever made.  Guess she just wanted to see Hawai'i.  Anyway, she is a Grisham fan, so we went to see the movie."

"And that's the only time you've seen it?" she asked.  AJ nodded.  "You've got a good memory!"

"I remember names; you remember faces," he explained.

The hostess finally approached them.  "Good evening.  Two for dinner?"

"Yes." AJ replied.

"If you'll follow me, please."

AJ had his hand on the small of Julia's back as they followed the hostess to their table.  Julia noticed many women's heads turn to watch them.  'Correction, watch him.  He is one gorgeous specimen, especially in that uniform!'

AJ noticed many men's heads turn to watch them.  'Correction, watch her.  I can't imagine why no one has claimed this treasure before now.  Incredible luck, Chegwidden!'

When they finished dinner, the waitress approached their table.  "Would you care for dessert?"

"Do you have any cake with chocolate frosting?" AJ asked.

"We sure do."

"We'll have that."

"One piece to share?" the waitress asked.

They both laughed as the waitress looked on in question.  "No.  Two pieces.  The lady does not share dessert."

The waitress nodded and disappeared.

"Hey, I shared my frosting with you last night," Julia argued.

"No, actually, you shared my frosting with me last night!" AJ corrected.

"Oh, I guess you're right.  It was your frosting, wasn't it?" she laughed.

The waitress served their cake, and they were delighted to see mounds of frosting on the plates.

Before Julia had a chance to pick up her fork, AJ swiped his finger across the frosting and held it in front of her mouth.  She opened, and he slid his finger inside.  "Mmm!  Good," Julia said as she licked his finger clean.

"The frosting or my finger?" he said in a suggestive tone.

"Both!"

They finished their cake and as Julia excused herself to the ladies room, AJ paid the bill and left a generous tip for the waitress.

When Julia didn't return after five minutes, AJ began to get nervous.  He walked over to the Marine guard and said, "I trust there is a guard in the back by the restrooms?"

"Sir!  Yes, Sir!" the Marine replied.

AJ nodded and headed to the back.  Before he even got halfway there, he heard a piercing scream coming from that direction.  He ran, knocking over several empty chairs, and when he rounded the corner where the restrooms were, he found a dead Marine lying on the floor with a waitress standing over him, screaming.  "Timmons!  Man down!" AJ yelled, calling for the Marine at the front of the restaurant who immediately came running.

AJ grabbed the downed Marine's sidearm, and banged on the door of the ladies room.  "Julia!" he yelled as he burst through the door.  There was no one in the room.  AJ's eyes quickly saw the brush lying on the floor.  He picked it up; the strands of hair in it were definitely her dark auburn.  He also saw a comb on the counter next to the sink.  He picked it up; yes, it was the comb Julia had in her hair.  Evidently she'd been primping a little when they grabbed her.

"Admiral?  Any sign of her, Sir?" Corporal Timmons asked.

"No, just her brush and hair comb," AJ said.  "How the hell did this happen?" he asked as they exited the ladies room.

"Sir, it appears that they must have come in through the back door.  I've got two Marines down outside, too.  Who are these guys, Admiral?"  Timmons knew better than to expect an answer.

AJ pulled out his cell phone and dialed.  "Damn it, Rabb, pick up!"  The phone rang three times before he heard a voice answer.

"Rabb."

"They've got her, Rabb!  And we've got three Marines down over here, " AJ wasted no time telling him.

"Oh, God!" Harm moaned.  "Sir, where are you?"

"Harm, what is it?  What's happened?" Mac whispered.

"The Dancing Crab in DC," AJ answered.

"I know it.  We'll be there in 10, Sir!"

AJ knew who to call next.  He hadn't wanted to believe the rumors he heard.  But it was clear now; they were true.  They had to be.  He dialed another number.

"Webb."

"Chegwidden.  They've got her, Webb.  I've got three downed Marines.  What the hell are you people up to this time?"

"AJ, she's not in any danger, I'm sure of it."

"They put a bomb on her car this afternoon, Webb!" AJ argued.

"Because they knew you'd find it!  They aren't going to hurt her."  Webb hoped that was true.  You could never tell with these people.  They changed their minds and their plans too often to be absolutely certain.

"You'd better be right, Webb.  If anything happens to her..."

"Where are you?"

"The Dancing Crab.  DC."

"On my way.  You call Rabb?"

"He'll be here in 5."

"So will I," and he hung up.

"Harm, what is it?" Mac asked as he hung up the phone.

"We have to go; sorry," Harm said to their dinner companions.  "Mac, come on!"  Harm grabbed bills out of his wallet and threw them on the table.  Mac wasn't moving fast enough, so he took her arm and pulled, "Mac, now!"

They ran to his vehicle and jumped in.  Mac barely had her door closed when Harm pulled out.  He burned rubber as they sped across town.

"Harm!  What's going on!?" Mac asked again.

"That was the Admiral.  Julia's been abducted," Harm started.

Mac gasped.  "Oh my God!"

"And there are three Marines down... so far," he added.

"Has he called Webb?"

"I'm sure he has, Mac.  I'm sure he has."

Harm pulled in to the parking lot just in front of Webb.  As they entered the restaurant, they saw AJ at one of the tables.  His elbows were on the table, his head in hands.  Mac had only seen him this way once before, when his daughter Francesca was kidnapped.

"Admiral?  Are you all right, Sir?" Mac asked gently as she placed a hand on his shoulder.

AJ's head snapped up and when he saw Webb, he rose from the table.  "No, Mac, I'm not all right.  Someone I care very much about was just kidnapped right out from under my nose.  And all I've got to show for it is three dead Marines, a brush, and her hair comb."  He turned to face Webb.  "And you, Mr. Webb, had better start talking."

"Admiral, you know I can't..." Web started to make his excuse.

"I know you can!" barked AJ.  "And I know you will tell me everything!  Start with Field.  Why was he in North Carolina in April?"

"Lt. Commander Sam Field was working an op for us, AJ.  He's a SeAL; he's trained in black Ops; we knew we could trust him.  He's got a proven record."

"Go on."  AJ sat back down.

"He was supposed to make contact with our operative, then go from there.  But our guy never showed, so when Field called in, the mission was scrubbed."

"He didn't have car trouble, did he?" Mac asked.

"No, I didn't."  Sam Field walked up.  "That was where I was supposed to meet my contact."

"Then Julia's 'divine intervention' was really nothing..." Mac mused.

"Actually, Julia Kensington's stopping to help Field probably saved his life," Webb said.

"What?" asked Harm.  "How?"

"I saw Johansen drive by not 2 minutes after Julia stopped," Sam said"He had a gun pointed at me.  If Julia hadn't been there, Johansen would have shot me right then."

"I don't get it, Webb.  If Johansen wanted to kill Field, he had plenty of opportunities.  Why would he just accuse him of attempted rape?  It doesn't make sense," Mac said.

"Johansen isn't a killer... yet.  He's only a kid; this was his first job."

"Oh, I'd say he's a killer now, Webb.  Three Marines?" Mac reminded him.

"This wasn't Johansen, Mac," Webb said.

"And just how do you know that, Webb?" she asked.

"Because you have Johansen in custody.  He's in the brig, remember?" Webb reminded her.  "On the drive over here, I called to be sure he was still there.  He is.  I also called Field; that's why he's here."

"I wondered," Harm muttered.

"I talked to Johansen this evening; he spilled his guts."  Webb chuckled.  "They don't make 'em as tough as they used to."

"Webb, who, exactly, are we dealing with here?" Harm wanted to know.

Webb ignored Harm's question and continued.  "Johansen thought if he could just discredit Field and get him put away, it would clear his way to finish his assignment.  Thus, the attempted rape charge.  He knew Field didn't know how to reach her; he dropped a bug in her purse at the restaurant that night."  AJ looked up at this bit of news.  "He listened to their entire conversation... everything.  So he knew she never told him her last name... and that she was out of personal cards.  He figured it was an easy win."

AJ hadn't said anything in a good while, but he'd been listening to everything.  Now he stood and said to Webb, "He bugged her purse?"

"He bumped into her and dropped it in as they arrived at the restaurant.  Admiral, what are..." Webb stopped as he saw AJ's mouth turn into a very thin smile.  "She has her purse with her?"

"It wasn't in the ladies room... or anywhere we've looked.  I'd say yes," AJ answered.

Webb grabbed his phone and dialed.  "Don't get your hopes up, AJ.  That was in April.  This is August.  Women change purses... clean them out...  Chances are not good that it's still in there," Webb prepared him.  "This is Webb," he barked into the phone.

Twenty minutes later, Webb barked, "We've got a lock!"

"AJ, I can walk.  Please put me down," Julia protested.

"Humor me, Jules.  I almost lost you tonight," AJ countered.

"I'll get the door, Admiral," Mac said as she took the keys from his hand and scooted past them.

"Thanks, Mac," he replied.

She opened the door and they all went inside.

AJ carried Julia into the house and straight into the guest room, surprising everyone.  They all expected him to take her to his room, to his bed.  'Bet I just shocked the hell out of everyone!' he chuckled to himself.

Rabb, Field, and Webb stayed in the living room but Mac followed the Admiral into the guest room.  "Here, let me turn down the bed, Sir," Mac offered.  She grabbed the summer quilt and top sheet and pulled them back while tossing the huge feather pillows to the ground.  There were two smaller down pillows for her head.

AJ laid Julia gently on the bed.  He kissed her bandaged hands, then her mouth.  He stood up and headed for the door.  "Mac, would you please stay with Julia and help her change?  There are a few nightgowns in the drawers and a robe hanging on the bathroom door."

"Of course, Admiral," Mac agreed as he was closing the door.

"AJ?"

He opened the door, again.  "Yes?"

"Are you okay?" Julia asked as she sat up and swung her legs over the side of the bed.

"Me?  Am I okay?  Jules, you're the one who was..."

"I know what happened to me, AJ.  But you're not acting right.  You're..."

He moved quickly to her.  Seeing this, Mac stepped out of the room to give them some privacy.  "Julia, I'm fine.  I'm just concerned about you.  You're not used to this kind of..."

"Adventure?" she supplied.

"Adventure?  I don't know that I would have used that term," he said.

"What better term?" she laughed.

"There!"

"What?"

"You're laughing, again.  I missed hearing that.  I missed your smiling face.  You haven't smiled or laughed since we found you.  I was getting very worried," AJ explained.

"I'm sorry.  I guess I was so overwhelmed by everything..."

"You don't have to explain, Darlin'.  Now, I want you to get some rest.  Mac will help you..."

"Mac's not here," Julia interrupted.

"She'll come back in."

"I'd rather you help me, AJ."  Seeing his hesitation, she added, "Please?"

AJ stood and went to the dresser.  He opened a drawer and pulled out a blue satin nightgown.  "Think this will do?" he asked with a crooked grin on his face.  He knew very well that it was too small on top.  It was Francesca's and Julia had a considerably fuller bust than his daughter.

"Mmm, pretty, but it looks a little too small." Julia said with a smile.  "Have anything a little bigger on top?" she added as she tried to unbutton her shirt.

AJ pulled out another; this one was red satin and even prettier than the blue.  He turned around to show her and saw her struggling with her shirt.  "Let me," he said as he knelt in front of her by the bed.  AJ slowly unbuttoned her shirt, gazing into her eyes the entire time.

Julia looked at the night gown. "This is beautiful.  But if the blue one is Francesca's, to whom does this one belong?" she teased.

"Her mother," AJ said with a catch in his voice.

"Oh, AJ.  I shouldn't wear this..."

"You most certainly should.  It's perfect for you.  And Marcella never wore it.  I bought it a couple of years ago when I intended on spending Christmas in Italy with her and Francesca.  Things didn't work out for me to go, so I just put the gown in the drawer and never sent it."

He had Julia's shirt off now, and he was lifting her slightly, pulling her shorts off her hips and down her legs.  "I think it's time to put that on, Jules," AJ said in a very husky voice.

"I can't unclasp my bra, AJ," she said as she held up her bandaged hands.

AJ picked up the night gown and put it over her head, letting it drape in front to cover her.  Then he reached behind her and unclasped the bra with one quick movement.

"Wow!  You're good at that!" she laughed.

"Practice," was all he said.

"More like experience," she countered as he smiled back at her.  "Thank you for helping me change, AJ."

"My pleasure," he said as he laid her back on the bed.  He pulled the sheet and quilt up to cover her, kissed her, and left the room.  "Sleep well, Darlin'," he said just before he closed the door.  He knew she would sleep; she was exhausted.  He just hoped she didn't have nightmares because of all this.

"Should I go back now, Admiral?" Mac asked as she saw him coming out of the guest room.

"No, Colonel.  She's fine now."

"I meant to help her change, Sir."

AJ grinned.  "She is changed, Mac."

Mac wasn't surprised.  "Can I get you something to eat, Sir?  Drink?" Mac offered.  'What I wouldn't give to have him change my clothes... just once!' she thought to herself.

"Thanks, Mac.  I'll take a shot of...  No.  Just a tall glass of water will be fine," AJ replied.

"Aye, Sir."

As Mac came back in the living room with the Admiral's water, Webb stood and said, "I think I'll head for home.  I haven't had any sleep in 72 hours.  I'm glad this one is finally over."

"Webb."  AJ said.

"Yea?" he answered as he turned to face the Admiral.

AJ stood and walked over to the CIA agent.  "Thanks.  I owe you one."  And he extended his hand for a shake, an extreme rarity in Clayton Webb's experience.

Webb shook his hand, and replied, "No you don't, AJ.  I owed you... still do."  He looked over to the guest room door.  "Take care of her, AJ.  You're good for each other."

"AJ?  Are you here?" Julia asked as she opened the guest room door and walked into the living room, still clad in the red satin night gown.

"Julia!  Good morning!" chirped Harriett.  "What a gorgeous night gown!"

"Harriett!  Hello!  What are you doing here?"  She was delighted to see her new friend, just surprised.

"Well, it's about time you woke up," said AJ as he and Harm came in through the front door.

Harm stopped dead in his tracks and stared.  'My God, she's a vision!'

AJ headed straight for her and enveloped her in a hug.  "Did you sleep well?" he whispered in her ear before he kissed her lightly.

Mac came in behind the men, saw Harm's expression and laughed to herself.  'I'd better help him out here before the Admiral sees him lusting after his girlfriend!'  She reached up with her hand and pushed Harm's jaw closed.

"Miss Jule!  Miss Jule!" screeched little AJ as he detached himself from his father's grasp and ran to her.  He latched on to her legs and said, "Up!  Up!"

As Julia bent over to hug him, she gave the men quite a view down the inside of her gown.  "Hello, Sweetie!  I can't pick you up today, AJ.  See?  My hands are all funny."

"Hurt? Miss Jule hurt?" he asked.

"Just a tiny little bit, Sweetie.  They don't hurt much at all now."  She stood back up and heard the men's collective breaths released.  As she looked around the room, the men's faces all turned beet red.  'Oops.  I guess I just gave them a show,' she mused.

"Oh, I'm sorry, Ma... Ma... Ma'am," Bud stuttered as he finally moved to take control of his young son, again.

"Bud, put your eyes back in their sockets, please," Harriett laughed at her husband.

"Ogling the Admiral's lady, Bud?" Harm teased.

"No more than you were, Flyboy!" Mac bantered back.

"I think I need to go get dressed.  Excuse me."  Julia turned to go back in the guest room, but AJ caught her arm.  "AJ, I'm so sorry.  I should have..."

"I rather like what you have on," he whispered, interrupting her.  She blushed furiously.  "Nice match," he commented.

"Match?"

"The color of your face now matches your night gown, Darlin'."

"I'm going to need some help, again," she said softly.

He walked her into the guest room and closed the door behind them.  AJ took her in his arms and pressed his lips to hers.  As she parted her lips, he moved his tongue to deepen the kiss.  Only a few seconds passed before he tore himself away and breathed, "Oh God...  Julia, I can't...  I can't..."

He opened the door and went back in the living room.  "Harriett.  Mac.  Julia needs some help," and he nodded to the guest room.

Neither woman said a word; they just walked to the door, opened it, and went inside.  They found Julia sitting on the bed, crying.  Mac rushed to her side.  "Julia, what is it?  What's wrong?  Do you hurt?"

She shook her head, "No."

Harriett walked over to the bed and knelt in front of Julia.  She picked up her bandaged hands and held them as she spoke.  "Julia.  He couldn't help you dress this morning because he wouldn't have dressed you."  Harriett paused for effect and Julia looked up at her.  "He would have laid you down on this bed and made love to you.  And with a room full of his subordinates just on the other side of that door, there is no way he could do that."

Mac looked at Harriett.  'This woman never ceases to amaze me.'

"Do you really believe that?" Julia asked.

"Yes, I do.  Julia, when he just walked out that door, his eyes were black with passion.  I've never seen him that way before.  I'm surprised, actually, that he was able to leave you.  I'm surprised that he didn't open the door and order us to leave," she said as she laughed lightly.

Julia smiled.  She looked over at Mac.  "Mac, if you aren't busy this morning, I could use some help going shopping.  I don't have enough clothes for the weekend.  And it looks like I'm staying after all."

"Once we all leave, I don't think you'll need any clothes," Mac joked, and the three of them laughed.  "I'll be happy to go shopping with you, Julia.  And I know just the place!"

"Thank you.  Harriett, I'm assuming that you and Bud are still leaving for Florida this afternoon, right?" Julia asked.

"Yes, we are.  I think my mother would shoot us if we cancelled our trip, again."

"So, what do you want to wear now, Julia?" Mac asked.

"I guess I'll have to wear my dress from Thursday."

Thirty minutes later, the three women came out of the guest room.  "I was beginning to wonder what was going on in there," AJ said.

"Takes a while to get washed up with hands like these," Julia explained as she held up her bandaged hands.  "Mac and I are going shopping, AJ.  But I need to make a couple of phone calls before we go so I can cancel my weekend plans at home."

"I'm sorry about all this, Julia," AJ offered as he led her to the study and the phone.

"It wasn't your fault, AJ.  Don't be sorry.  Actually, I'm kind of glad it turned out that I have to stay.  I wouldn't have felt right canceling my friends, but I really wanted to stay."

"I'm glad.  But I was hoping for a little different weekend... sailing, sightseeing...  You want me to dial the numbers for you?"

"Either that or put a pencil in my mouth."

"I'll dial."

She told him the first phone number and when it connected, he put the receiver to her ear.  "Hey, Freddie, it's me. ... Yea, well, good reason for that.  I'm not home. ... I'm in DC. ... Well, something came up and I had to come up here and straighten it out.  Turns out I'm going to have to stay the whole weekend. ... Yea, that means I have to cancel dinner tonight.  I'm sorry. ... Of course, we'll do it another time. ... Great. ... Love you, too.  Bye."

AJ looked at her with a question in his eyes.  "He's my best friend, AJ.  Has been for 12 years.  Strictly platonic, believe me. That's all he's ever wanted."

"I believe you.  I just find it hard to understand the men you know.  They're either blind or idiots... or both!" AJ said.

"You're sweet," she answered as she told him the next number to dial.  "When did the doctor say I could do without these bandages?" she asked.

"Tomorrow.  I can remove them tomorrow," he answered as he put the receiver back to her ear.  "Your hands will still hurt for several weeks; they were burned pretty badly."

"Admiral, this was so nice of you to have us all here for a cookout this evening," Harriett gushed.

"Least I can do, Harriett," AJ said as he flipped the burgers on the grill.

"It really is nice of you, Sir," Bud added.

"Just a small way to thank everyone... for all you've done in the last 18 or so hours.  Sorry Field couldn't join us."

"So, Bud, what happened?  I thought you two were off to Florida this afternoon?" Harm asked.

"We were supposed to be, Sir.  But about 30 minutes before we were supposed to leave for the airport, Harriett's mother called and asked us not to come.  She won some kind of contest and they're off on a cruise tomorrow for the week.  So we didn't go."

"Good thing she caught us before we left for the airport!" Harriett muttered.

"Harriett's a little miffed, Sir," Bud said for Harm's hearing only.  Harm just smiled.  That was obvious.

"Did I hear someone say 'cruise'?" Julia asked as she walked out on the patio.  "I'll go!  Sign me up!"

"You enjoy cruising, Ma'am?" asked Bud.

"Bud, up until this morning, you were calling me 'Julia'.  What happened that suddenly, today, you're calling me 'Ma'am'?"

AJ walked over to her and put his arm around her shoulders, surprising everyone when he said, "Protocol, Darlin'.  You're the 'Admiral's lady' now... that demands respect."  He kissed her on the cheek and whispered, "Besides, you gave him quite an eyeful this morning, and calling you 'Ma'am' is the only way he can address you and not embarrass himself!"  AJ laughed as Julia turned beet red.

When dinner was ready and they all sat around the picnic table on the patio, Julia looked at her plate of food and groaned.

"What's wrong, Jules?" AJ asked.

"I can't pick up my hamburger," she said in frustration.

"AJ he'p!" little AJ cried as he scooted off his bench and ran to Julia's side.  He picked up her hamburger and reached up as far as he could, holding it out for her to take a bite.  Just as she did, little AJ let go and the burger fell to the ground.  "Oops," he said as he started to cry.

"It's okay, AJ.  We can make another hamburger for Miss Julia," Mac tried to calm her godson.  "Harm, go get another burger from the grill."

But Webb was already on his way before Mac finished her sentence.  He placed it on Julia's plate, and the Admiral promptly began putting the fixings on it.  "Tell you what, AJ," big AJ said to the little tyke as he prepared her burger.  "How about both of us feed Miss Julia?  Both AJs.  You and me.  What do you say?"

Little AJ didn't say a word, but he did stop crying.  The Admiral took this as a good sign.  "I'll feed her the hamburger, and you feed her the potato chips.  Are we a team?" he asked as he smiled at his namesake.

Little AJ nodded and hugged the Admiral's legs.  "Wonderful!" he said as he picked up the little boy and sat him on his own lap.  They spent the next half hour taking turns feeding Julia.  Big AJ gave her a bite of hamburger and a sip of her iced tea.  Little AJ put a potato chip in her mouth.  Big AJ gave her a spoon full of macaroni salad.  Little AJ gave her another chip.  And so it went until Julia's plate was empty... for the second time.

"Who's ready for dessert?" chirped Harriett.

"I'm always ready for dessert!" exclaimed Julia.  "What is it?" she asked looking at AJ.  She knew he'd made something while she and Mac were shopping.  When they returned, the kitchen was a disaster area.  Mac had insisted on cleaning it up before she left.

"Peanut butter pie with hot fudge sauce," he answered.  "My specialty."

"I love peanut butter pie!" Julia gushed.

"And the hot fudge?" asked AJ.

"What's peanut butter pie without it?" she answered.

"Good answer."

Mac and Harriett got up and cleared the table.  Soon they were back, carrying the pies and the bowl of hot fudge sauce.  "Harm, go get the plates and dessert forks.  They're on the counter in the kitchen," Mac ordered.

Harm obeyed, and Webb followed him to the kitchen.  "She always order you around like she is tonight, Rabb?"

"Huh?  Oh, yeah, she does.  Half the time, I ignore her," Harm joked.

"I noticed you two arrived together tonight... and last night.  You staking a claim?" Webb asked.

"A claim?  On Mac?  Are you crazy?" Harm really laughed now.  Then he sobered up a little.  "Wait a minute.  Webb, are you asking because you want her?"

"The thought's crossed my mind once or twice."  'More like every time I lay eyes on her!'

"Well, buddy, as far as I'm concerned, she's fair game.  But I'll give you fair warning, too.  She's been hurt enough in her life.  You hurt her, and you'll answer to me.  Got it?"

Web nodded as they heard Mac yelling, "Get your butts out here with those plates!"

Harm laughed.  "Good luck, Webb!"

AJ picked up Julia's fork and cut a piece of pie.  He raised it to her mouth and as she bit down on it, she moaned, "Mmm, this is the best!"

As he moved the fork to get another piece, little AJ stuck his finger in front of her mouth.  It was covered in hot fudge sauce.  "Open!" he ordered in his baby-like way.  Julia was startled, but she opened her mouth, and little AJ stuck his finger inside.  "Wick it off... wike you did Adm'l," he lisped.

There was a collective gasp around the table.  Webb was just about to make a comment when he felt Mac's hand squeezing his thigh.  He looked down at it and then at her.  She was looking at little AJ and Julia as she leaned into him and whispered, "Don't say a word; I'll tell you later."  She sat back up straight, but she never moved her hand.

Julia licked little AJ's finger clean and thanked him for the chocolate.  He was so proud of himself; he looked up at big AJ and said, "Miss Jule wicked me, too!"  The Admiral smiled at the little boy and said, "That she did, AJ."  He hadn't realized that little AJ had watched the scene at the table two nights prior.  Obviously he had.  'I'll have to be more careful in my deportment when that youngster is around.'  Of course, AJ had no idea that little AJ and his mother had also witnessed the scene in the kitchen the same night!

When the sun went down and the mosquitoes started buzzing around, they moved inside.  AJ put his arm around Julia's waist and led her to the sofa.   He pulled her close to his side as they sat down.  Harm and Bud took the recliners.  Harriett sat on the other side of Julia on the sofa, next to Bud's chair.  That left the loveseat for Mac and Webb.  "Colonel?" Webb motioned.  They sat next to each other, but not touching... that is, not until little AJ decided he wanted to sit with his Auntie Mac.

Mac reached down to help him onto the loveseat in between her and Webb.  But little AJ didn't want to sit next to Webb.  He wanted to be next to Auntie Mac, and only Auntie Mac.  Which meant Mac had to sit closer to Webb so AJ could sit on her other side.  It was uncomfortable at first, but finally Webb relaxed a bit and put his arm around the back of the loveseat, giving Mac just a bit more room.  Before long, his arm slid down and was around her shoulders.  Mac relaxed into it almost without even realizing his arm was there.

Several hours later, Harriett announced that it was time for them to leave.  She hated to always be the first ones to leave anymore, but with a youngster, it couldn't be helped.  Everyone else decided it was probably time to leave, too, and they all rose to say their goodbyes.

Harm decided to help Webb out a little.  "Admiral, I never did help you with that problem in the garage earlier.  Why don't we do it now while I'm here?  Webb, would you mind giving Mac a lift home?  You don't mind, do you, Mac?"

At first, AJ was confused by Harm's comment.  He didn't have a problem in the garage.  But when he asked Webb to drive Mac home, he knew what Rabb was up to... as did Webb.  "Thank you, Harm.  That would be a tremendous help.  That is, if it's okay with you Webb?  Mac?"

They looked at each other and both said "Fine" at the same time.

Mac walked over to Julia and said quietly, "Do you want some female help tonight?  Or are you hoping for better?"

Julia smiled back at Mac and said, "I think I'll be just fine tonight, Mac.  Thank you so much for everything."

"Okay.  Feel free to call me tomorrow if you need me.  I'll be home."

"Are you sure about that?" Harriett asked as she joined them with little AJ in her arms.  "Looks like the men are staging a coup... and you're the prize, Ma'am."

"What?" asked Mac.

"Mr. Webb," she answered.  "And you."  She smiled as Mac finally understood.

"The Admiral never asked Harm to help him in the garage, did he, Julia?" Mac asked.

"Not that I know of.  As far as I know, AJ hasn't even been in the garage today, but then I wasn't here all day..."

"Ahh.  Okay.  Well, now I know what's going on.  Can't say that I really mind either," Mac said with a grin.

"Well, it looks like the Commander's going to be the only one with no bed fellow tonight!" Harriett said, and the three of them laughed.

"Hey!  What's so funny over there?" Harm asked.

"Girl talk, Harm!" Mac answered.  "You'll never know!"  And the women laughed even harder.

"Harriett!  Little AJ isn't a girl," Harm reminded her, walking over and taking his godson in his arms.  "Are you, boy?"

"Unc'a Harm.  I sweep wif Unc'a Harm tonight.  Then he no be awone," little AJ offered.

"What was that AJ?" Harm asked.  He still had trouble making out little AJ's jabber sometimes, and especially when AJ was tired.

"He said that he'd like you to come and sweep the floor with him sometime, Commander.  He likes to sweep the kitchen now," Harriett lied.  The women laughed, again.

"Harriett!  That's not what he said at all.  He said he would sleep with Uncle Harm so he wouldn't be alone tonight," Bud offered.  As he finished his statement, he realized what it meant.  "Ooohh," he muttered.

"Come on, Bud, let's go... now!" Harriett said as she took her son from a red-faced Harm.  "Good night, everyone!"

"Good night!" they all called.

"Mac, you about ready?" Webb asked as Mac walked toward him.

"Most definitely, Clayton," she purred quietly as she got closer to him.  He offered his arm, and she took it.  As they walked out the door, she called back over her shoulder.  "Harm, you don't have to wait for us to leave.  You can go ahead anytime.  I'm sure the Admiral and Julia would prefer you not hang around."

"I'm just going to help him with..." Harm started.

"Yea, right.  Good night, Harm.  Good night, Admiral.  Julia."

"Thanks, again, AJ," Webb said.

Harm watched from the door as Webb opened the car door for Mac, handed her the seatbelt, and shut her door.  When he turned around, AJ and Julia were watching him.  "I'm surprised, Harm.  I never figured you'd approve of Webb for Mac," AJ said.

"Why not, AJ?  He seems like a very nice man," Julia offered.

"He is, Jules.  He's just... different."

"Dangerous, you mean, Admiral.  Yes, Sir, he is.  But he also knows how to treat a woman properly, unlike the losers she's dated since I've known her.  I'd be happy to see her with Webb.  She understands his work, so she won't be afraid of it or repulsed by it."

"I'm sure you warned him?" AJ asked.

"You know I did, Sir."

"Well, I hope things work out for them.  Webb is a good man; solid.  Comes from a good family, too.  And Mac deserves someone good in her life.  God knows she's had enough heartache."

"Yes, Sir.  She has that.  Well, Sir, I'll say good night, too.  Julia."  Harm nodded to the Admiral and hugged Julia.  As he held her close, he whispered, "AJ deserves someone good in his life, too.  And I do believe you're her."

AJ closed the door behind Harm and turned to take Julia in his arms.  "He's right, you know.  You are her."  AJ picked her up and carried her to his bedroom.

The End.  (continue to Divine Intervention, the Sequel)
