Lieutenant Jake Cooper received his first missive from six-year-old Brianna Donnelly in 1970 while leading a SeAL team in Vietnam. He didn’t have time for a pen pal, certainly not one in grade school. He hardly had time to finish the paperwork required at the end of each mission!
Dear Mr. Soldier,
My name is Brianna. What is your name? I am 6 years old. I will be 7 next week.
Miss Pratt says that you are far away from home and that you are serving our country and helping the people where you are. I think that is very nice of you.
I hope you will write me back. I really hope you will.
Jake smiled broadly as he finished reading Brianna’s letter. ‘Ah, what the hell. It’ll only take a minute.’
That minute turned into years of correspondence and sharing. Years of happiness and sadness. Years of secrets and promises.
And now that Brianna is an adult, it’s Jake whom she wants. Will he want her? Someone he remembers as a child? A school girl?
But Brianna isn’t a child any longer, as Jake soon discovers.
Coming soon!
